We have liberals, moderates, and conservatives everywhere so its not as easy as blue states/red states, but if it was decided to split the country and the left got half and the right got half while the moderates had to decide where the wanted to live would this be a good thing?

(4,167 posts)They say that a country and a society at least have to agree on core principles that bring them together while being able to have fierce debate and disagreements on other things, but its to the point that we dont even agree on anything

I hadn't realized this was a fantasy exercise where we magically separate "good" people and "bad" people, and nobody's conflicted because family and loved ones end up on the other side.
Carry on then, but in that case, why should anyone care about the answer? It has no connection to reality.

(34,136 posts)Too many people are invested in where they live and would not give it up, plus if you divided the country geographically the two parts would still fight.
I live in the American South, have always lived in Florida, have lived at my present location for over forty years. I will NOT give up my property even if it meant that more of my neighbors would be right wing nut jobs. This place is mine and my husband and I have worked hard to make it what it is. We will not leave it - we plan to die here.
At the time of the American Civil War, if the North had said, "OK guys, you just go on and make your own country" what do you think would have happened? The South would still have declared war - they could not survive economically without the North. They would have fought for domination even if the North did not want to fight. This country and the world do not need that happening again.

(26,044 posts)...that, geographically, we don't have neatly-drawn "blue states" and "red states." What we really have, if you look at it from a geographic viewpoint, is a bunch of liberal cities and everywhere outside them conservative. If you looked at a map, you'd see an ocean of various red shades with a few bright blue dots.
The west coast is thought to be among the most liberal parts of the country, but, even here in Washington state, that's because of a concentration of Democratic/progressive voters in Seattle and Tacoma. Even when you get out to my part of the Seattle exurbs, I'd guess it's split 50-50 at best. Anywhere beyond that, and you may as well be in Wyoming. The same is true of Oregon and California. If these states were to split off from the U.S., by mutual agreement or otherwise, you'd find the vast majority of the territory held by right-wingers. And, since they have full control of most of the land and infrastructure (and almost all of the guns), what you'd probably see in those states is instant internecine civil war, as the right-wingers would fight to either take control or bring the state back under the Trumpian dominion.
The only geographical split, even an amicable one, that would avoid such a conflict would result in about 99% of the country being under conservative control, with a bunch of disconnected progressive "city-states" existing as Bantustans inside that country, most disconnected from any resources, agriculture, or, in some cases, even a port for imports and exports. Anyone care to bet how long such an arrangement would last?

(26,044 posts)It split into a whole plethora of independent states (as a matter of fact, for a time, it was officially known as "the Community of Independent States" ). Twenty-five years later, what did you see? Virtually all of those "independent states" have now been subsumed under Mother Russia...because they retained all the military power. I see no reason to believe that a split here at this time wouldn't eventually have the same result.
