I personally know multiple lifelong republicans who hate Trump but theyre willing to vote against every single one of their personal beliefs in the interest of one single issue- abortion. Roe v Wade is THE thing they vote over, and they arent happy about it. Im not going to get into the ridiculousness of being a single issue voter, Im sure we all agree about that.
But heres the thing. When, not if, the Trump judge is put on the bench- he will have lost the single hold he has over a certain block of evangelical voters. He will have freed them. They will be liberated and wont feel beholden to vote for Trump to preserve the chance to upset the Roe v Wade standard.
Obviously we have a big future fight on our hands to keep choice legal. But this makes the battle on November 3 easier for Joe Biden.

(9,998 posts)They're going to suddenly abandon the guy who gave them EXACTLY what they've wanted for years? Yeah, sure, that's going to happen. They'll love him even more than they do now.

(1,836 posts)And the hand wringing over having to vote for Trump has been in earnest. This was literally THE issue that kept them hooked. And I plan to make darned sure they get that message.

(25,586 posts)Thats for show, a public demonstration of an inner decency that simply does not exist. Evangelicals are as driven by hate and racism as any other segment of the Right, they just have a better cloaking device.
Its just a different flavor of garbage human.

(1,406 posts)Most anti-choice that I know are also anti-maskers, anti-ACA, anti-social services...al the things that promote life "more abundantly" for others they are against. So really, if there were no abortion issue they would most likely find something else from the list to be the single issue that would keep them from being "Christ-like" They are really Christians only to the extent they despise all other religions because. These people are not "pro-life" they are not even "Pro -birth." They really would like the "births" of all others to stop BUT they sure as hell don't want to pay for that. They aren't the first people to hide behind and use religion to accomplish their most inhumane desires. They wouldn't even mind paying taxes as long as those tax revenues would not be used to help those "others." In a hyphenated word they are "anti-others."

It will however, galvanize a majority of voters, to throw these bums out!
Mosco Mitch might not lose, but his legacy is a pile of Kentucky horse country shit!

(68,768 posts)salvation lies in a collaboration of Democrats and indies...62% of all Americans want abortion to remain legal. This will make it a voting issue. We have to hope the fact that the ACA goes away with a 6/3 court and a Trump victory, and we lose health care will motivate some GOP types as well.

(36,748 posts)All repeal of Roe v Wade does is kicks the issue back to the states.
If they repeal, the Repuke party is history in the abortion legal states.

(16,616 posts)This happened months ago to my mom. It didn't seem worth posting at the time but now it is relevant.
She has a lifelong friend who has always voted Republican but about five or six months ago she told my mother she was not voting for Trump again and when my mother asked her why she said it was because of abortion, Roe and the Supreme Court. She volunteered this information. I wasn't sure what to make of it and was wondering if there might be some other reason she wasn't divulging, because we ALL KNOW Republicans are a party that wants to make abortion illegal. That is not exactly news. But nevertheless, that exactly what transpired in that phone call.
She is a white female in her mid to late 70s.

(16,376 posts)She may never have been a single issue anti-abortion voter at all. Back in the day, Betty Ford, Nancy Reagan and Barbara Bush were all pro-choice.

That's interesting about the First Ladies.
Do you think that story is a good sign, or am I placing too much importance on it?

(16,376 posts)Now she's realized she figured wrong.
If they were easily manipulated into single issue voting in order to overturn RvW, they will just as easily be manipulated into voting to keep RvW overturned.
The new talking point will be Dems want to bring abortion back.
These folks are lost. Our country will be better off when these elderly Christian fundamentalist scumbags have all died off.

(9,866 posts)When T contests the election in November, when (if)he loses, the new Supreme Court will back him.
We will have chaos for months. Years?
Along the way, the ACA will be cancelled.
All voting rights will be curtailed, because that's Robert's life work.
The only hope is to win enough Dems in the Senate this November that we can expand the Court number.

(6,477 posts)on the courts, and consider that good enough, especially if it means the general divisiveness that separates them from family and neighbors subsides.
It's not "evangelicals." You're wrong about that. Those people are sick and gone. It's more likely educated Republican voters in the suburbs who have conservative values but generally don't like Trump's lack of decorum and the anger he promotes. These are people who don't identify with the Red Hats and gun nutters, the camo crew invading the State Houses and no-maskers making a spectacle of themselves in stores. They consider those people beneath them (they are). They identify more with their liberal neighbors, who now can't stand them, who have unfollowed them on Facebook and no longer like their kids' First Day of School or birthday pictures. And they want that to end. Is it enough of a margin to be significant? Perhaps. In suburban Milwaukee, in suburban Pittsburgh, in suburban Atlanta, maybe just enough to push it.

(10,180 posts)They've even done it on West Wing. If you want to win elections, throw women's rights under the bus to placate a small, loud mouthed, quasi-crazy, group of radical, right wing religious zealots akin to the Taliban.
Throw Roe to the wolves and I for one will never vote for another male candidate as long as I live.

(4,611 posts)for that exact reason. Every election cycle, it was a marvelous tool for them to energize their nutbag base and get them to the polls no matter who the party was running. No way in hell they would want that gift to disappear.
But we're in a new era now; the roles in the GOP are reversed. The nutbag base is driving the car and taking the party elites -- who just want tax cuts and deregulation and more wealth transfer to the rich -- along for the ride. The rank-and-file GOP culture has shifted so far that nutbaggery is the new normal. Evangelicals and nutbags are no longer a voting block being exploited by the GOP; they ARE the party, and they spend each election cycle exploiting the money-men and elites who want tax cuts. Trump wasn't forced on them; they forced him on the party establishment.
So once Roe is gone, the party will simply move on to the next item on nutbag list -- prayer is school, banning Muslims and gays, etc. -- and the rank-and-file will continue to turn out. Because it really is their party now.

(14,583 posts)Abortion just is the one issue the Rs have some moral legitimacy to, they cling to it for that reason.
But, these people have the same malice and hatred to "others" as the rest of them do.
