I don't see any other possible outcome, and perhaps that's the way it's supposed to be. What McConnell did to Obama in his final year was totally unfair and a slap to senate duty.
What the republicans are doing now is fair and proper. Such are the spoils of office. Putting the blatant hypocrisy aside, this is how the procedure is supposed to work. Merrick Garland was an aberration to democracy. Trump stumbling into another appointment is not.
All I can say to make myself feel better is "turn about is fair play" We will get even and gain the opportunity to tell McConnell and his ilk to go fuck themselves. Politix is like a pendulum and when pushed too far it swings back hard.

(4,845 posts)and 2018 when we lost seats in senate. I have hoped that RBG could hold on long enough till Biden is in office but unfortunately it didn't happen. The republicans stole Merick Garland's seat though.
Though, their clear power play and hypocrisy makes it possible that we can expand the court later. I was against such a thought even a week ago but now, everything is fair game. I think there are many moderates who thinks like me.

(34,857 posts)It sucks they're hypocrites but they are doing things the way it should. Elections do have consequences and Trump is president. He has every right to nominate a justice and the Senate has every right to confirm. We knew this was a real possibility when we lost the WH in 2016.

(6,355 posts)My focus is on taking the WH and the Senate while holding the House.
My hope, at that point, is that our Democratic leaders will be as committed to creating a better future as Republicans have been dragging us into the 1950s. We have to learn from the experience of the last 4 years and I want to see them exercise the power. I love me some BHO and vote for him again 7 days a week and twice on Sunday. That said, IMHO, the last Dem to really understand how to weld power was LBJ...but what the hell do I know (and I'm sure many will rush to pint out what I don't know...lol).

(7,715 posts)We cannot stop this, but it will backfire on the Reputincans. Who knows: maybe there will be a documentable scandal against the appointee that will cause they to lose more R votes and voters. You NEVER know.
Anyways, let's keep our eyes on the prize(s) and win back the WH, the Senate, expand the House, and win as many state and local elections as we can. Once we're back in power, we settle up.

(16,844 posts)It's maddening that Trump is going to be appointing a third Supreme Court Justice in one four year term, especially since it would only be two if Obama's nominee hadn't been ignored for nearly a year. But I take comfort in knowing that the Republicans finally overplayed their hand and I expect the Democrats to make them pay for their abuse of the system. If Garland had been confirmed, Democrats would only be registering their disappointment that RBG was being replaced by the Republicans, but since they got greedy, the Democrats are going to add more seats to the Court and the GOP are going to lose their advantage. Of course, that all hinges on the outcome of the election. We can't allow it to be stolen.

This is especially true of all those who live in South Carolina.
I have the good fortune to live in a state where my entire Congressional delegation, both Senators and all three Representatives, are Democrats and extremely likely to remain so.
