Moreover, the Democratic nominee for vice president, Sen. Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.), sits on the Judiciary Committee. Do Republicans really want to give the whip-smart, telegenic senator potentially hours of live TV coverage watch Democrats give her their time so she can rake the nominee over the coals during which she makes clear just how extreme Trumps nominee is? I am going to guess the answer is no.
Worth waiting to get past the paywall.

(54,370 posts)Harris can grill the nominee to the point where they come across as having less intellectual capacity than a fried cucumber. The Republicans will vote to confirm nonetheless. McTurtle grins so much because he knows it.

(10,429 posts)They couldn't care less about qualifications. Harris made beerbong-brett cry, and even that emasculation didn't deter them.
They jumped in line to confirm that blubbering beer-guzzling lying rapist.

(5,733 posts)The point is FREE national exposure for Kamala, and to an audience that would not be composed primarily of Dems. Both Independents and moderate Repubs, plus Trump's "Base," will also be interested in these hearings. Biden can stretch his campaign dollars further, which will help make up for the fact that Trump is using our tax dollars to fly around to these Coronapalooza Campaign Rallies.

(67,798 posts)The seat will go to whatever extremist they choose. That's a forgone conclusion.
This is about shining the light on Harris and her shining it on the extremist so as to piss off the electorate just that much more.

(11,302 posts)sometimes have a little trouble keeping up. Within hours it was clear that the Rs had enough votes to approve a diseased vegetable to the court. We're now talking about how that plays out with the public -- and the election.

(19,264 posts)It is largely based on the idea that everyone would want to do a good job for the betterment of the country. Mitch could have the nominee read a prepared statement and then call a vote immediately. The only reason to not do that is if you think that will cause you to lose the vote but Republican Senators are already saying they WILL confirm whoever Trump picks before even knowing who it is. Why even have a pretend hearing? Now I think for appearance sake Mitch will have a hearing but it will be perfunctory and a sham. "See we had a hearing and everything". Then he will call a vote and it will go by party lines.
Our system of government doesn't work if one of the parties cares about nothing but winning.

(4,986 posts)some sanctimonious (and shameless) statement about it being an election year, so they can't possible hold everyone up from going home to campaign.....
We live in an age of irony.

(9,986 posts)One day in the Judiciary Committee, two days at most in the Senate, then a quick vote. Done. At this point, Im more in favor of a vote before the election because we know it would happen anyway after the election, and this vote puts every vulnerable Republican on the record.

(6,857 posts)Lindsey Graham is the Committee chair, and he will bypass hearings altogether if it occurs to him that Kamala will be Kamala.

(16,100 posts)I don't think they will have hearings, he'll just hold a vote and all the Republicans will vote to end debate before it even starts and it will go to the floor pretty much immediately to a "yes" from all Republicans.

(18,402 posts)Theyve seen their president, cabinet members, and others raked over the coals by incisive, brilliant interrogators in the House and Senate. They dont care.
Impeachment, horrific nominations, and the bad acts uncovered in hearings ... all have been met with big ho hums and denials, and theyve gone ahead and voted however they wanted to.
Its incredibly naive to think Republicans actions and allegiances will be moved by either savvy Democratic words or public shaming. They are intractable. And so are their voters.

(6,137 posts)they have plenty of time, but many of the hearings would occur before November and keeping Kamala busy with the hearings is more advantageous to gop than having her campaign.

(5,733 posts)That is because they have not only intelligence but a core of decency, and most important, an awareness from history where Trump's and McConnell's actions could lead. We could lose the Constitution. We could lose our country. Putin sits up nights salivating over this.

(5,477 posts)Nothing really locks them into the usual process, and they all have to be scared completely shitless that any hearings will turn into full-blown tRump and Repuke 'bashing' (that is to say, Democrats on the floor pointing out their lack of any honor or scruples whatsoever in their power grab). They definitely don't want a televised hearing which would garner HUGE viewership and have their hypocrisy laid out in plain language for all to see.
They especially don't want to take a chance that any of the voters that are still straddling the fence or weakly supporting Needy Amin and the rest of the GOP swampdwellers might be pushed to vote against them after seeing in great detail exactly how corrupt they really are.
