Costco recently removed a popular pimento cheese brand from 120 of its stores after the owner called the Black Lives Matter movement a "terror organization" on his public Facebook.
In reaction to the murder of two local residents, Brian Henry, founder of Palmetto Cheese and mayor of Pawleys Island, South Carolina, took to Facebook on Aug. 25 with a message many residents considered to be racist in nature. Although the post has since been deleted, screenshots circulated social media calling on customers to #BoycottPalmetto.

According to the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office, the man Henry spoke of, 23-year-old Ty Sheem Ha Sheem Walters III, was arrested on Aug. 24 for shooting three people and killing two 21-year-old Laura Anderson and her step-father, Nick Wall during an altercation following a car accident that day in Georgetown, South Carolina.
Following Henry's statement against Black Lives Matter, Costco removed the product from 120 of its stores. A corporate spokesperson declined to comment to TODAY. However, the Post and Courier, which broke the story, obtained a photo of a sign from Costco in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina that specified the cheese was "discontinued" and would "not be re-ordered." Henry also confirmed to the Post and Courier that his product was in the process of being removed from shelves.

(5,547 posts)Those deaths are tragic and should be mourned. The difference is that the alleged perpetrator was pursued as a criminal.
The same is true of all of the canards about black-on-black killings. They are crimes and treated as such. Suspects are arrested, charged and tried.
If the killings of black people by police were treated as crimes, it would be a different conversation. It would still be tragic but at least there would be some sense that the police were responsible for their actions and that justice could be served.
PS; Costco rocks.

I keep telling these fuckers, "The quickest way to make BLM go away forever is to act as if you think black lives matter just as much as your own." But they'd rather chew their own leg off than do that.

"I am profoundly sorry to those who I offended with my posts last week," he said. "My comments were hurtful and insensitive. I needed to self reflect and reach out for dialogue and understanding."
Henry said he had met and prayed with Black faith leaders and said he was grateful for their forgiveness. He said he was in the process of creating a foundation to help aspiring entrepreneurs in the memory of Vertrella Brown, who has been depicted on the cheese company's label.
"My goal is to be part of the long-term solution," he said.
To that end, Henry said Brown was depicted because of her love of southern food and embodiment of ideals the company wanted to encourage. However, he pushed back against claims that the cheese recipe was hers, saying it was and had always belonged to his wife, Sassy Henry.
He said the company always had a compensation agreement with Brown, and his company was in the process of re-branding.
"We have pledged to move forward," the mayor said, asking for those pushing to boycott the cheese company to consider the hundreds of jobs they were putting at risk.
Henry declined to answer questions following his statement. Calls to the Georgetown NAACP chapter for comment have not yet been returned.
Let's just wait and see if any of this sticks. Starting off with borderline non-apology and ending by hiding behind the very workers HE put at risk with his racist bullshit isn't the brilliant PR coup he may have thought it was.

8oz sharp cheddar grate it yourself, coarsely
1 jar diced pimentos, undrained
Mix together and add mayo to attain the consistency you prefer.
Sometimes I add in dill pickle relish or pickled jalapeños to shake things up. Ive never had store-bought pimento cheese that was as good as this!

(4,766 posts)I had it for lunch at Husk; I took one bite, pulled out my phone, and ordered the cookbook right then and there.
It is a little labor and ingredient intensive; I usually use a half cup of diced canned roasted pimentos, and since you probably don't have pickled ramps lying around, pickled pearl onion and the absolute tiniest wisp of microplaned garlic are a workable substitute.

(8,868 posts)I personally do not have pickled ramps, but this is ramp country. Every spring I dig fresh ones. I love Ramos. We have a major festival here for them every spring. Feel sure someone here I know has some picketed. Cant wait to try this. Thank all of you for these great ideas. I will try them all. This one really has my attention.

I asked someone there what might be the best day to find then and told him why i wanted them. When i was checking out my order a box of Kirkland wipes appeared on the belt and into my cart. I paid for them and my order and kicked in 10 bucks for their charity. The person checking me out said his niece went to my son's school and if i needed more he had some in his car.

(14,498 posts)Why was it necessary for Mr. Henry to mention race at all in his rant? If he wants to rant, it should be about gun violence in general.
Just remove the word "black" and "white" from his third sentence and nothing he says makes sense.
People are turning everyday non-racial incidents into racial click bait to push a political addenda...........
Local article on this issue, below. Henry sure stirred up a hornet's nest around the Low Country:
No longer the person for that job: NAACP again demands Pawleys mayors resignation

(snip)
Town council met via Zoom on Monday night, alleviating any potential showdown between the Georgetown chapter of the NAACP and the mayor. This was the second call by the NAACP for Henry to resign, the last occurring on Aug. 29.
With three dozen people in attendance on a sweltering Monday afternoon with two holding signs that showed support for Henry the tone of the NAACPs planned protest was simple: It no longer trusted Henry to represent the best interest of the community.
I lived in that area for a while and it's one of the most deeply racist zones I've been around and I have traveled all over.
Pawleys Island has embraced the descriptive phrase "arrogantly shabby" for decades and Henry's rant is quite representative.
