Democrats build big lead in absentee ballot requests in New Mexico

Democrats have requested more absentee ballots than Republicans in New Mexico.

According to the Secretary of State's Office, 158,860 absentee ballots have been requested by Democrats in the state. Republicans trail behind Democrats with 48,430 absentee ballot requests.

Nearly 40,000 absentee ballots have gone out to people who decline to state their party.
Only 1,504 Libertarians have requested an absentee ballot.

New Mexico sent absentee ballot applications to all registered voters in attempt to keep people from voting in person during the pandemic.

Vote for who you want, and it's a secret ballot.

But you must register to vote,
and you need register with a party or as an independent (independents don't vote in party primaries).

So when people request an absentee ballot, the election folks know with which party (if any) you are affiliated.

Thus 'X' number of Dems,
or 'X' of Reps,
etc requested absentee ballots.

I wondered how people knew what party by the envelope. Time to adjust that maybe?

We recently had a two term GOP governor, state legislature, and mayor of Albuquerque.
Big Tea Party population in the southern part of the state.
