(1,400 posts)man. that is great news. i did it 4 times, but no more. grueling it is.
but boy, did i work w some losers. i mean, then we had a paper poll books, and i worked w ppl who barely knew their alphabet. i worked w ppl who had to wear velcro shoes cuz they could barely manage laces. srsly.
i did work w some seniors. they were the sharpest knives in the drawer.
there was a team that worked every election in one multi-precinct location. they were out of there in half an hour while the rest of us were trying to remember what went in envelope e.
new blood is so badly needed. flexible schedules might just be good for something after all.

(9,651 posts)She had horrendous arthritis in her hands, and was unable to tie laces anymore.
She lived to be 94, and she was as sharp as a tack. And she also volunteered to work at the polling place for as long as I can remember.
For my mom. Velcro shoes and all.

(1,400 posts)the velcro shoes was a developmentally disabled person. we had to put her in the job of sitting by the ballot box and handing out the 'i voted' stickers.
the one who didnt know the alphabet, i called the boe the next day to try to make sure they didnt work another election. i was told- that's the committeeman's judge. we cant do anything.
there isnt supposed to be a head judge, but i was always it. even the first election i worked. it was always that bad.
this is chicago. we need a woooole lot of bodies. but they take anyone w a pulse. and the money is only worth it if you have none coming in.
this news sorta makes me want to vote in person just to see how it goes here.

(13,772 posts)My age and the fact that my social group is my age, along with contagion rates in TN, made me decide not to work this time.
I worked the August election, it was manageable since it was steady but not overwhelming. But this will be different and I just cant afford to be that exposed to potential coronavirus carriers.
Im glad that younger people are getting involved. It is rewarding work and I hope they will continue to do it.

(21,447 posts)this year. Would have been my first time. But I will be 71 in a few weeks and have some health issues that would make it too risky. So, I opted out. I am glad that younger people are stepping forward.
Trevor Noah has ended several of his programs with appeals to young people to step up so older ones can stay safely home. So maybe they are responding to his call.
