Girls say they were restrained, sexually abused and deprived of food at religious boarding school

Amanda Householder received an urgent Facebook message in early March about her dad from a man she hadn’t talked to in years.

Her father, Boyd Householder, ran a religious boarding school in rural Missouri called Circle of Hope Girls’ Ranch that aimed to “http://www.circleofhopegirlsranch.com/" target="_blank">help young ladies” stop making poor choices. And the man who messaged her, Joseph Askins, who had viewed Boyd as a friend and mentor, was disturbed by what he had seen on a recent visit.

At the ranch, Askins later told NBC News, he saw Boyd smack a child in the mouth and force a girl to chug water and then drink her own vomit. Askins said he heard Boyd order teenage girls to assault one another. “Knock her out, I mean it,” the voice of a man — whom Amanda, Askins and others identified as Boyd — is heard saying in a video Askins captured.

The video disturbed Amanda, 29, but it was far from the first time people had raised concerns about what was happening at her parents’ ranch.

But these schools seem never to be good ideas.

some of them are great, a couple are real shits. at least none of them cost me a lot of money. didnt send any of them to college, and havent had to bail any of them out of jail.
and not a grandchild from the lot.

folks, dont let your hormones talk you into shit. it never works out like you think it will.

I have three living children and though they are sometimes a pain in the butt, I wouldn't change a thing, except maybe we'd have had them before our mid-30's.

I love them dearly. Our two oldest are in college now.

The youngest is only in 6th grade, so he's having a bit of an issue with online school, but we'll get through this.

Maybe it is because our first died, but I treasure my kids, even when they are being buttheads.

The biggest frustration with only boys is the lack of conversation sometimes. Second is the stinky shoes.

I'm a talker and they...aren't, they are just like their father, which is a mixed blessing.

The one we lost was my girl. Ah well. Guess I am just the mother of boys.

i didnt lose any born children, but lost a pregnancy that was likely twins, then one of identical twins. the youngest was very sick, still is. walked the halls of the children's hospital contemplating the ugliest what if there is. i know that pain will never leave you, and your grief will never be finished.

i have girl, boy, girl, boy, non-binary. no matter how mad i am at them, if they need me i am there. forgiveness is def what being a mom has taught me.
also, gold bond powder in the shoes.

And I am sorry for your losses too. Losing a child is awful.

I'm also there if they need me, but even right now, I'm annoyed at my two oldest who are home for the day for being pissy to each other for no reason.

Many of us have no desire to have kids, and do;t get those who want to.

And, to stop the WHAT IF YOUR PARENTS FELT THAT WAY?!????!!!?

Well, I would have never been born, so who cares.

I do share the sentiment though about people being more thoughtful about reproducing. There's WAAAAY too many friggin people on this planet. That I'm not kidding about.

I'm not sure it would be so great if the world were filled only with the offspring of fundie wackos and hard core nationalists and racists.

my parents were as complementary a pair of geniuses as there ever was. and my ex, for all his flaws, had an iq of 126.
i produced 5 crazy geniuses. a chemical engineer, a phd in theoretical math, an all star kitchen manager, an amazing gender queer artist, and a great drummer and musician.
i was a great first teacher, like my da was for me. we homeschooled for 8 yrs.

no grands yet. the engineer is too old, the artist is sick and had a hysterectomy young. but the manager has a great man, and will likely have 1.
the boys, who knows?

but there isnt a racist bone in any of their bodies. like me. i just wasnt raised that way.
the other 6 in my family produce 21 grands for my mom. there are great great grands now, tho mom is gone.

i think most smart ppl these days keep it to 1-2.
and someone has to dig the ditches.

They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another’s throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don’t have any kids yourself.

-Philip Larkin
