Amy Coney Barrett: spotlight falls on secretive Catholic group People of Praise

Last edited Sat Sep 26, 2020, 06:59 PM - Edit history (1)

Donald Trump’s expected nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to the supreme court, to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg, is drawing attention to a secretive Catholic “covenant community” called People of Praise that counts Barrett as a member and faces claims of adhering to a “highly authoritarian” structure.

=========================
Interviews with experts who have studied charismatic Christian groups such as People of Praise, and with former members of the group, plus a review of the group’s own literature, reveal an organization that appears to dominate some members’ everyday lives, in which so-called “heads” – or spiritual advisers – make big life decisions, and in which members are expected to financially support one another.

Married women – such as Barrett – count their husbands as their “heads” and all members are expected to donate 5% of their income to the organization.

Some conservative and progressive activists have said any discussion of Barrett’s faith is inappropriate in the context of a Senate confirmation to assess her judicial qualifications, and potentially reflects anti-Catholic bigotry.

I demand that Ofjesse's Handmaid and Husband Head, (and maybe his Head Head) be included in any proceedings so that we can find out how they will direct her in her decisions as they are obliged to do.

This cult comes as a package deal and a sacred oath is a sacred oath which seems to take precedence over her oath to serve on the court, from what I can see.

lie when they say they will NOT be influenced by their religious beliefs. The Jehovah's witnesses call it "theocratic warfare" when they lie to people. They claim that it's OK to lie in order to get people to join their group. Cults control their members, and they will do what they are told by their leader, or leaders.

That's a good example.

I saw a short interview with a woman on Democracy Now who was a member and her story was unsettling regarding this group and their tactics.

follower. God's the ultimate authority, of course, and she chose a god who has his male authoritarian nose in every aspect of her woman's life.

If she gets on the court, she may really use her position to overset democracy for Trump, even though once sworn in she could break all promises to Trump and he couldn't do anything. Guessing serving god and bringing a sinful nation to godliness will trump serving the republic we inherited beyond any consideration, though.

I would ask her, "What would happen if you and your husband decided to leave this group?" And I would research what they do with the 5% tithe. That's alot of money.

In another thread I read her a few days ago, an article by a former member of the group stated that those who left were shunned by the group, another example of a cult. As for the money I really doubt they could get it back.

Here husband is the head of their household, and then are the religious leaders who would be be the ultimate person she would have to obey. If she were to do something not OK with the leaders, it would be very unusual in a cult mentality.

Please remember that if a Muslim or an Atheist is nominated. Why can’t we just have a normal damn person on the Supreme Court? I mean, someone qualified but normal in other respects.
