The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has grown increasingly concerned that President Donald Trump, pushed by a new member of his coronavirus task force, is sharing incorrect information about the pandemic with the public.
Dr. Robert Redfield, who leads the CDC, suggested in a conversation with a colleague Friday that Dr. Scott Atlas is arming Trump with misleading data about a range of issues, including questioning the efficacy of masks, whether young people are susceptible to the virus and the potential benefits of herd immunity.
"Everything he says is false," Redfield said during a phone call made in public on a commercial airline and overheard by NBC News.
Redfield acknowledged after the flight from Atlanta to Washington, D.C., that he was speaking about Atlas, a neuroradiologist with no background in infectious diseases or public health. Atlas was brought on to the White House task force in August.

(6,865 posts)Is he compromised? A closet flasher? For that matter, what's up with Birx? Is she the "Susan Collins of medicine" or not? She has made no effort to call down Trumps wrongnesses in real time, even when they are a threat to the health and well being of the nation. She just has this "frozen in horror" look she swallows.
How do you like that, "wrongnesses"? "I got a million of 'em", thank you James Durante.

(60,010 posts)Birx's current half hearted musings about "maybe I should disagree out lloud with trump" have done her no good at all. Like Redfield, they had a narrow window of time to walk away, and didn't.
A lot of people saw her and him on the stage and assumed they were both CDC.
It's his voters who are gonna bear the brunt of Covid. I so feel sorry for their defenseless young kids.

(70,635 posts)A group of 78 researchers and doctors from Stanford Medical School are calling out former colleague and White House coronavirus advisor Dr. Scott Atlas for spreading what they characterized as falsehoods and misrepresentation of science.

The radiologist and senior fellow at Stanford Universitys conservative Hoover Institution has advocated against the use of masks and pushed the White House to adopt a controversial strategy, allowing young people to contract the coronavirus in hopes of achieving herd immunity. Atlas, who doesnt have any training or background in infectious diseases, has appeared on Fox News to push for reopening schools and questioned the efficacy of masks.
Many of his opinions and statements run counter to establish science, and, by doing so, undermine public-health authorities and the credible science that guides effective public health policy, reads the letter addressed to colleagues on Wednesday. It lists a series of bullet-points, highlighting the importance of public health interventions like wearing masks and social distancing. The authors also point out that testing asymptomatic people is important, and children of all ages can be infected with the virus.

Encouraging herd immunity through unchecked community transmission is not a safe public health strategy, it says.
