I think he showed two days after the Access Hollywood tapes, which were barely a blip to him. He doesn't care, and, just like he did with HRC, he'll just say this shows how smart he is to avoid paying taxes (and then he'll mention all the other taxes he has paid.) Just like that, in his mind, there are no further issues with this.

He is running out of time, and I think he believes he can do his gaslighting and projecting on Joe (e.g., you take drugs, your family is corrupt, etc.). He is going to try to run circles around Joe in a (futile) attempt to make him look weak.

On the tax issue, if I were Joe, once I tee'd up the specifics, I'd say "C'mon, man, and you wrote off $70,000 in hairstyling expenses? Many Americans don't earn that much in a year." That's good for a percentage of votes!

Outside of Russian interference, Trump is running out of time, money, and options. So he'll show up.

he's so great at anything and everything, that he can just show up and wing it, and it will be spectacular. Taxes shmaxes. It will be the best televised debate performance by any Republican ever, except maybe Lincoln.

People might think he has covid19 (we wish!), and any illness is a sign of weakness. Canceling his appearance for any personal reason would be a sign of weakness. And Velveeta Voldemort would never give up a TV appearance with a guaranteed audience of millions.

Trump is in a very uncomfortable spot today, one he's uncertain of how to handle. He might just be feeling like punting to regather his team and then rejoin the battle.

It's one possibility I'm considering, anyhow.

He is not. Trump is in his own reality where he's the smartest, greatest person alive on the planet. Trump truly believes he's going to do just fine in the debate and can sell himself like no one has been able to ever sell themselves before.

There's no way he would duck the debate. If anything, he's probably even more fired up because he truly believes he can talk his way out of anything.

On a high school honor society trip to Disneyland in California in 1962, we all trooped into the Animatronics "Presidents" attraction. Things went fine, until Abe Lincoln stood up to speak. He stood up, and then fell over on his face. The audience was quickly ushered out of the attraction, and we all went to other places in the theme park.

Perhaps Trump will fall over at the debate, if he shows up. He does seem unsteady on his feet...

That would be a sight to behold, for sure.

As I remember, I went on many high school trips to Disneyland. It was a very popular destination for such trips. The other most common trip was to the Griffith Park Observatory, but that was, somehow, less popular with the students.

He doesn't prepare for debates (thinks he's too smart), so he could be a tad nervous about this one, especially with no audience.
