His base doesn't care about that. Hell, him avoiding taxes probably makes them stand up and applaud.
It's that he lied about being a successful businessman who was going to leave his ivory tower, drain the swamp, help the American people and "make America great again."
And they're so drunk on the Kool-Aid that they may not even care about that. But then again, they can't look UP to their boy anymore, because in some cases they're probably more well-off than he is. So who knows how they'll react?

(19,264 posts)Trump is a broke failure and the Republican base got conned by a loser.
First is that plenty of people respect unethical successful people but nobody respects a broke failure. Second is that Trump being called broke and a failure is going to keep him off message. His image of being a successful bigshot is the single most important thing to him. Nothing else even comes close.

(53,410 posts)Sure they love it when he hurts liberals, but very few people like paying taxes because they take it personally as the government stealing from them while never making the connection to the myriad benefits we receive in exchange. But when Trump doesnt pay taxes they feel conned. And the smarter ones feel that in some underhanded way Trump is personally benefitting off of their taxes. Which he is.
Evangelical leaders are tax evaders themselves so they will approve, saying thats how god showers blessings on them. In those cases the fools will give their leaders even more money because they think god would want that and will welcome them into heaven. But in spite of everything many regular MAGATs will resent people who get to benefit from things which they are forced to give up their hard earned money to. Its one thing to fly around in airliners and live in golden towers, but if they feel its at their expense, behind their back, leaving them to struggle and hardship, they will turn on him.
Not all of them of course. But probably most of them.
