General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI am looking at the Nytimes report of his businesses and the losses ... Something struck me
I am thinking aloud here.
Donald Trump has always wanted to belong to the rarified Manhattan elites and has desperately tried all his life to be one of them.
He tried building what he thinks are 'classy' properties that they would love.
But they don't want him ... They see his brand as tacky and crass. And consequently Donald Trump's golf resorts etc is hemorrhaging money ....
Donald Trump is probably very aware of this and it eats away at him....The rise of Obama and how he was embraced by the people he has tried to impress all his life - just scrambled his brain. It is that visceral rage that he channels and that a lot of Magats identify with.
Am I wrong?

(12,286 posts)He eats steak well done with ketchup.
He is boorish and crude and a known grifter who doesn't pay his bills.
He laminates everything in gold leaf.
He is a poor mans idea of a rich man.
He is a weak mans idea of a strong man.
He is a terrible failure as a president, as a business man, as a father, and as a human being.
He is not now and will never be a member of the elite class of New York society.

He should be broken and driven from all decent society. Lock him up.

(16,937 posts)I LOVE how brilliantly he did slam "The Donald!" And it wasn't just him - that was the national Press Corps and tons of celebrities and dignitaries from all over. Listen to THEIR reaction to PRESIDENT OBAMA'S comments. I'm sure "the donald" has played this over and over to make a list of more names to create his own "Nixon" enemies list.
The sad part?
What we've lost.
PRESIDENT OBAMA is such a brilliant man - so calm, so collected, so confident in who he is - yet so willing to listen, consider, and learn.
And doing all of this while being the subject of a true hate campaign by the RepubliCon party.
Ultimately, I cry for our country in what we've lost - and how so many are so blind to that fact.

(219 posts)And you can just see the switch flip @ the 9:30 mark in the video. Obama, a black man, openly mocking him in front of a room full of people who ended up laughing at him. You just know he's replayed this moment over and over again a million times since it happened.

(3,266 posts)what we know now about Trump and his narcissism, this was three-dimensional chess on Obamas part, again. He invited the Donald, then proceeded to serve him a dish of the very thing narcissists fear the most - ridicule. He not only made fun of him himself, he got the entire room of the very people Donald has always craved to part of to laugh at him, again and again. It was a master stroke of revenge, because it was so very personal in spite of being so public. Obama let trump know that he knew trumps deepest fear, and used it against him. Brilliant. https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/article/watch-inside-the-night-president-obama-took-on-donald-trump/

I am not sure about that. I think he never really wanted to be president. He just wanted to increase Brand awareness and value.

(16,937 posts)There have been many articles about how he didn't really want the job, but rather, just the notoriety of it all and the chance to increase the coverage of his own businesses. (sorry, don't have the link to that - I'm sure it's easily found!).

(1,178 posts)Ever since this, he's been trying to "get back" at Obama. The thing is, Trump has failed in every attempt. It's like the Looney Tunes cartoons, where one of the characters is trying to get either the RoadRunner or TweetyBird, and each every time they fail at their attempt. And it eats Trump alive.
always thought that just did him in. Maybe he had multiple mini strokes when that happened and it scrambled his brain, but then I think it was long before that.

Defiantly proud of their ignorance and ridiculed by 'society'.

In Trump, they have a champion. Not a very noble champion
but he belongs to them and vice versa.

(37,162 posts)It's always related as "old money snobs rejecting the kid from Queens", but that smacks of Trump PR. There was probably a bit of that, but it wasn't insurmountable.
What was insurmountable for Trump is the fact that he can't even fake having an ounce of class and style, and he was so obviously needy to be one of the "cool kids" that it, by itself, put people off.

(46,190 posts)They have money, old money.
Donald Trump is a generic nouveau riche, arriviste, parvenu. Trump believed all he needed to be invited to their homes, to join their clubs, to socialize with them, to be put on their Boards of Trustees and/or Directors was enough money. He believed that without blue blood and a family history, he would be welcomed.
Re-read The Great Gatsby. The tale of an outsider looking in and being punished for having the nerve to think he was as good as Tom, Daisy, and even Nick.
Trump thought he could entice them on a commercial basis. He was wrong. All he attracted was fellow nouveau riche who were more often than not celebrities. Trump was never invited to a soiree with Brooke Astor or Gloria Vanderbilt.
Heck, D.C. has its own social register, The Blue Book. I'll bet nobody has sought an invite the W.H. or even invited anyone in his administration for cocktails or one of their parties. They've closed ranks when Trump moved in January, 2017.
I believe it's been this built-up resentment that has been the reason for his manic behavior.
JHB
(37,162 posts)It wasn't just that they were old-money Manhattanites and he was a new-money kid from Queens. If there was ever a time to break out of the Gatsby mold and get acceptance into that crowd, it would have been the 70s and early 80s.
However, Donald himself cut off any possible inroads because of who he is, the parts that have nothing to do with where he was born. His personal crudity, his self-centeredness, his dictator-chic crass sense of style, his desperate need for external validation, his lack of interest in anything didn't put money in his pocket, praise in his ear, or get him laid, etc., repelled the old-money "cool kids" every bit as much as it repels us today.
It's not the reason for his behavior. It was an early manifestation of it.

(65,170 posts)Of course, the Manhattan elite in the financial industry probably knew he owed big money to everyone.
That knowledge would make him suspect in the minds of people who actually are good at making money.
Plus, he was probably putting the bite on everybody, all the time.
Who wants to be around that?
Obama was just a guy, not a scammer. Brilliant & humble. (As humble as people with high political aspirations can be, I suppose.)
Of course smart, successful people were going to be more willing to embrace him & his success.
lunatica
(53,410 posts)Humility and humbleness, for some strange reason, has been conflated with poverty and humiliation, perhaps due to literature, but in reality it is a state of mind. It is someone who is not arrogant or conceited about their power. A person who does not think they are superior to others, and believes that character and thoughtfulness and kindness are basic human values.
