(25,917 posts)I read recently about someone scamming the IRS out of millions of dollars by filing completely fraudulent returns, which somehow slips by them.

(10,279 posts)Couldn't get anyone to answer the phone. Logged into my history file on their system, and got the special number I needed to permit online filing. Fail. So, I mailed it.

(20,268 posts)Last year got rejected 4 X. AGI wrong in order to ID return by electronic filing.
Charged $400+ late filing fee, $100+ interest and another $32 underpayment penalty already included in tax amount due. They consistently made me late then fixed my butt with penalties. Funds were in my bank account on file, but they jerked around not debiting tax amount owed.

(32,106 posts)10 years ago. The IRS has made no attempt to get any of it back. Which is an indication the income tax laws were followed. There have been all sorts of people claiming all sorts of illegal activity but so far no one has shown any real evidence. This is more of an indication that our tax laws are upside down than anything else.

(31,261 posts)One time an accountant made a mistake on my tax return. I didnt catch the mistake. I was expecting a large refund because of the dynamics of a business assignment that I had been on for about a year. The IRS immediately sent me a refund check for the amount indicated on the tax return. I cashed the check. A few months later I got another letter from the IRS saying that the refund amount on the tax return was wrong, because the agency sent me too much money, I was asked to return the difference.
My guess. Trump got a fraudulent refund, then the audit group went over the return and found that he didnt deserve the refund. That is probably why Trump claims he is being audited, he is using all types of tactics to avoid paying the money back. What I dont understand is why the IRS didnt get really aggressive with him years ago. In my case, I had a CPA check my tax return, determine that the IRS claim was accurate and then I paid it.
