(73,577 posts)It's an Algonquin language, and the phrase translates approximately to "the trade," or "to trade."
A number of place-names in the NE come from Indian phrases, rather than single words. I live near the Susquehanna River, which is also a phrase. It's interesting that both the Algonquin and Iroquois peoples living at various places along the river used a similar sounding phrase for the river, with somewhat different meanings.
Not far from Oneonta, NY, there is a village named Otego. Locals pronoune it "Oh-tea-go," thought the phrase that is based upon was "ott-tu-go."
Perhaps I am giving Tucker too much credit, though I normally give him none. But, intentional or not, he was pretty close to accurate.
