No 'dogma': Democrats walk tightrope on Barrett's faith

By MARY CLARE JALONICK and ELANA SCHOR

WASHINGTON (AP) — “The dogma lives loudly within you.”

It’s that utterance from California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, that’s on the minds of Democrats and Republicans preparing for this coming week’s hearings with Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett.

Feinstein’s 2017 remarks as she questioned Barrett — then a nominee for an appeals court — about the influence of Barrett’s Catholic faith on her judicial views sparked bipartisan backlash, contributing to the former law professor’s quick rise as a conservative judicial star.

Three years later, Barrett is back before senators as President Donald Trump’s nominee to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The nomination poses a politically risky test for lawmakers as they try to probe Barrett’s views on issues of abortion, health care access and gay marriage without running afoul of the Constitution’s prohibition against a religious test for public officials.

Last night Lawrence O'Donnell nailed it on the right wing hypocrisy and there BS about abortion, the drugs that Trump is taking to fight whatever is running through his body and head, was developed with 1970 fetal cell stem cells to create the drugs he is using to fight the virus, and most drugs that have been created today is because of stem cell research, so this BS that religion is off the table, her religion and stem cell research is on the table...........her taking any medication more than likely came from testing and using stem cell research to create the drugs she may be using for her and kids and the entire right wing hypocrisy..................so fucking religion is on the GD table ...............

It isn't about faith. Biden is a Catholic and likely has ideas about policy that are informed by his Catholicism. The difference is that Liberals do not tend to want to impose their religious ideas on everyone else through government policy.

Barrett is likely to pursue an agenda based specifically on her more extreme beliefs which is against the 1st Amendment to the Constitution.

about her FAITH per se. You can't put it that way, because Joe Biden is also Catholic. It's about the way she chooses to express her faith and use it as a battleaxe on society, a la Torquemada, rather than keeping it to herself to guide her own life.
