Retired Sen. Bob Dole took to Twitter on Friday to claim the Commission on Presidential Debates is biased against President Donald Trump. The tweet came amid a standoff between Trump's re-election campaign and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden over the second presidential debate. The commission made the second debate virtual after Trump tested positive for the coronavirus, but after Trump refused to participate, the debate was completely scrapped.
"The Commission on Presidential Debates is supposedly bipartisan w/ an equal number of Rs and Ds. I know all of the Republicans and most are friends of mine. I am concerned that none of them support [Trump]," Dole, who ran against President Bill Clinton in 1996, tweeted. "A biased Debate Commission is unfair." The tweet made Dole, 97, a trending topic on Twitter and set off a flurry of responses.
The commission considers itself nonpartisan, but Trump and other Republicans have accused them of bias against Trump. The commission's board of directors includes former Republican Senators John Danforth and Olympia Snowe, reports The Hill. All living former presidents also serve as honorary co-chairs. The Trump campaign first accused the commission of being biased against him when there were reports the commission was looking to change formats after the chaotic first debate when Trump frequently interrupted Biden and moderator Chris Wallace.

(17,989 posts)I trust Olympia Snowe and John Danforth more than Bob Dole.
Bob was a hero in the war, but in Politics no way. He was always on the wrong side of the fence.

If Dole would remember the Republican Party as it was when he first ran for National office (as Gerry Ford's VP in 1976), he would know full well that there is NO resemblance between that party and Donald Trump. They finally "let" Dole run for president, which he always wanted to do, in 1996, which was throwing him a bone, just as they did to John McCain in 2008, when it was obvious that no Republican would win the White House after 8 years of Cheneybush. Dole apparently hasn't sensed the damage done to the "Republican" label since Mitch McTurtle got control of all three branches of government in 2016.
WHAT unfairness was committed against Trump in that debate? That he wasn't allowed to have the stage to himself for 95% of the time, instead of the 75% he tried to grab as it was?

(16,858 posts)It's sad that he supports Trump now, but I don't really hold it against him. If he had all his wits about him, I don't think he would have wanted Trump in his party, much less as President. Dole used to be more the cantankerous tightwad version of Republican, not the divisive bigot. It will be a shame if he's remembered for supporting Trump in his last days.

(30,817 posts)The Bob Dole I remember would not support Trump. I don't think he would go rogue and be part of the Lincoln Project, but I'm sure he would be offended by what Trump has wrought.

(16,858 posts)when I called him senile. I do that a lot and it gets me in trouble. Anyway, I agree that the younger Bob Dole would have been offended by Trump. Dole is a wounded vet and was admired by both Republican and Democratic colleagues. He was willing to compromise for the good of the country; he wasn't willing to burn it all down. That's how I hope he's remembered.

(65,207 posts)Bobby, was an biased commission the reason you got pounded in '96, with your opponent getting more than 70% of the EC?
The answer is no, Bobby.
You got smoked 24 years ago because people either didn't trust you or they didn't care what you thought.
Nothing has changed, Bobby.

(1,568 posts)... I think hes past traveling and I wonder if that tweet is actually from him.
Two years ago, he came back to Kansas and his hometown and the extended family had a huge reunion. A friend of mine is a second cousin of his and said it was a chance to say goodbye to everyone- see the family one last time.
Im surprised hes still around.
