As predicted, the US is now grappling with a new Covid-19 surge -- one that could overwhelm hospitals, kill thousands of Americans a day by January and leave even young survivors with long-term complications.
"We went down to the lowest point lately in early September, around 30,000-35,000 new cases a day. Now we're back up to (about) 50,000 new cases a day. And it's going to continue to rise," Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, said Tuesday.
"This is the fall/winter surge that everyone was worried about. And now it's happening. And it's happening especially in the northern Midwest, and the Northern states are getting hit very hard -- Wisconsin, Montana, the Dakotas. But it's going to be nationally soon enough."
Across the country, more than 30 states have reported more Covid-19 cases this past week than they reported the previous week, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

(4,972 posts)The number of kids out is starting to spiral. It won't be long before more kids are gone than are here if the absences keep going up at the same, almost, exponential rate. This winter is going to suck.

(2,228 posts)To send the kids back four days a week beginning 11/16 and full time after winter break, ditching the hybrid model. Were in Ohio. Dewine is telling us our covid rates are increasing and these stupes want to send the kids to wallow in covid stew every day? And the teachers? Theyre not happy with this but theyre muzzled by the board from stating their opinion publicly for fear of dismissal. Its going to be a clusterf¥k. Not to mention that members of the completely revered football teams (2 high schools) have covid but theyve not put it on the dashboard. My daughter questioned a board member privately and she stated that she was going to check on the discrepancy that she didnt know why it wasnt reflected on the dashboard. Hmmmmm. Bet I know why its not showing up and I wonder how many more cases theyre not showing. Ohio in all of its proud idiocy. Yay.

(11,686 posts)I looked up pandemics of the past and the second wave is the worst. The third is not as bad as the first but it is still a wave.
I have gone back to staying home as much as possible again. Not that I was out much but I do not do anything for myself. Meaning, I do things for myself on the days I go out to help some other people that need the help.

(27,575 posts)I fear for my fellow Americans who have no idea what's coming.
Even with some mild cases, the long-term effects are horrific.
If you are sicker, it's way worse.
Having said that... Literally dragging my oxygen tank for early voting.

(19,137 posts)Improved therapeutics will mitigate it some, but the President has convinced half the country that social distancing doesn't matter. The Republicans have fought shutdowns and won in several states. Even some libs aren't taking it very seriously anymore. There is no will in this country for the shutdowns that will be needed in the very near future to prevent a total meltdown.

There's a new release movie out there to be shown in theaters only.
Do they really want to kill off the industry permanently?

I think many people have just adapted to this being normal for now.
Hoping it stays that way.
The laxity here hasn't appeared to hit, PINO lover or not.
