she was allowed to perform. Welcome to the club, Savannah. You blew Trump away. You saved NBC's ass and you showed up every reporter, mainly men, who has failed to ask the hard questions, failed to follow up, and played the corporate game of going along to get along. You were the epitome of poise, preparation and persistence.

(102,489 posts)COULD/WOULD be effective in dealing with Trump. In fairness to Wallace, he did an admirable job in his earlier interview and that was the aspect of the town hall that Guthrie handled so very well. She didn't have to try to deal with both a combative, lying Trump who was ALSO trying to cut off an opponent's opportunity to speak at all.
Frankly, though I totally agree with you that women are frequently underestimated, I think in Guthrie's case it was more from the standpoint of her work on "TODAY," which only occasionally features hard-hitting interviews and thus more often highlights the usual "fluff" that doesn't exactly let her or her colleagues showcase their true abilities.
At any rate, she did a very good job (I saw most of it via clips after the fact). I wish she'd been the one moderating the first debate and also the VP debate.

(13,907 posts)have been able to control Trump without the ability to control his mic. I like Chris Wallace but I doubt he would have been as hard hitting as Guthrie was.

(1,156 posts)She also may have had more of an opportunity than other journalists. He normally answers questions at the White House and simply ignores questions or walks away. This was important for him so he couldn't just walk away. From the transcript I read looks like she did an excellent job.
Again, I completely agree with you....

(24,348 posts)I would start a stopwatch every time he spoke out of turn. At the end of the debate I would give all that time to his opponent to speak about whatever he wants to. And I would tell him before the debate that I was going to do that.

(36,911 posts)A woman who gained internet fame for nodding and giving President Donald Trump the thumbs up sign during his Miami town hall on Thursday night could have used the free airtime two years ago because she was running for Congress as a pro-Trump candidate.
Mayra Joli, an immigration attorney and pro-Trump activist who once declared herself Miamis master of selfies during her 2018 campaign, was seated behind the president during his hour-long town hall. After the event, she greeted the president, according to a video posted to her Facebook page.
We have your back! You see, you see you are the best, Joli said to Trump shortly after the event finished.
Where are you from? Trump replied.
Im from the Dominican Republic, but Im American, Im an American, Joli said.

Ms Guthrie did in one night, over one hour, more to expose this genocidal criminal fascist for what he is than ALL who have 'interviewed, moderated this clown in all of this campaign.
Thank You Ms Guthrie.

And I'm talking predominately about the men of that so-called party. I realize, of course, that there are women who believe like them as well. However, it is overwhelmingly the men who want to marginalize women and have power over them.

(194 posts)Chris Wallace on a FoxNews program one-to-one interview against Trump last month. Even Guthrie's unnecessarily deferential comment that you're not someone's crazy uncle wasn't accurate, as Mary Trump has been telling the world many weeks now.
History will judge NBC and Guthrie as iniquitous enablers who are complicit for all the additional Covid-19 sicknesses and deaths resulting from the looney lies uttered during this town hall which NBC gifted Teump directly in opposition to Biden's town hall on ABC. Trump mocked NBC for their gift in an earlier rally rant.
Nothing Guthrie did will console the loved ones of these victims for NBC's day of infamy. !00 NBC' staff pleaded in a memo with their management to at least change the time. If Guthrie and all other news personnel had demanded this time change, the greedy NBC bosses would've had no choice but to make their gift to Trump a bit less destructive to the health of multiple thousands of Americans. How will you feel if your loved ones can't get normal emergency or ICU care because your hospital is overflowing with Trump supporters with Covid-19 infections?

(194 posts)propaganda network. He invariably points to one or two reasonable hosts, guests etc as "proof" that FoxNews is fair and balanced. However, what Trump and FoxNews do that my brother actually loves most is seeing Democrats "exposed" by being given the nastiest treatment possible.
Guthrie enabled NBC to perpetrate an attack on American democracy by rewarding Trump for his refusal to accept the decision of our independent Electoral Commission to hold a safe virtual town hall debate. For the past 30 years, Commission's been chaired by a Republican, yet Trump is the first candidate who's ever childishly dodged a debate. NBC and Guthrie ignored the pleading of 100 colleagues for the time to be changed, which would at least have allowed many more voters to view Biden's town hall and contrast the two candidates.
Yes, Guthrie gave Trump a tough time, but he still had a successful night in terms of spewing the usual lies, including promotion of conspiracy propaganda with his giving a nod and wink to Qanon. That folks on this thread have tunnel vision about Guthrie's being tough on Trump rather than her and NBC's egregiously dangerous reward to Trump has opened my eyes. Don't bother to rubbish this post because I won't read it. Moreover, this is my DU 162nd reply and, saddened to say, the last instance I'll be writing on DU.
Best of luck to you all. Stay safe.

(590 posts)I didn't think NBC News should have done this, but it's obvious not many people knew about Guthrie's skills as an interviewer, or Trump thought his old relationship with NBC was going mean a Fox-type home game. Guthrie has more Mike Wallace in her than Chris Wallace does. I think she went to "Today" from hard news because she's a new mom, and the network didn't seem to have a good fit for her in that arena.
