Sen. Angus King with the facts: The size of the Supreme Court is not fixed in the Constitution. It's up to the Congress. It's changed seven times over our history.

Eric Garland

And he's on the Senate Select Committee on...Intelligence. And Armed Services...so he has access to more defense information that most Senators.

Just throwin' that out there.

1. Eliminate filibuster
2. Expand SC to at least 13
3. Pass legislation to fix gerrymandering, voting rights, voter registration, vote suppression, etc. Make election day a holiday.

Once this is done, no republican will win an election again until they convincingly let go of their anti-american platform and this includes any dreams they have of changing the makeup of the supreme court as "revenge." Every piece of legislation that moscow mitch is sitting on has the support of almost everyone in the country.

I've heard one pundit say that eliminating the filibuster "would render the Senate meaningless." I don't see that as a bad thing at all (other than the wasted expense.) There have been many senators that have said that the Senate should be abolished, but that would require a constitutional amendment. So this is the next best thing.

5. The senate existed until the 1830's without the filibuster.

The filibuster was an appeasement to the slave states. The Senate had meaning back then and it will going forward.

8. No, the Senate has no positive meaning anymore.

Giving all the people in sparsely-populated states the same weight as the entire population of California, New York, etc., is not a democracy. It just encourages the race to the bottom.

BUT... that means changing the Constitution through amendment or constitutional convention.

We won’t get 38 states for the amendment, nor the 34 for the convention.

The easiest and fastest equalizer is getting rid of that damn filibuster.

10. That's right. Keeping the filibuster just insures continued minority rule.

But, without expanding the court AND fixing the joke voting fiascos, it WILL be a horrible mistake because the republicans will just turn up the "lie, cheat and steal" knob, cheat/suppress their way back into power, and pack the courts again.

The size of the Supreme Court and its heavy consequences have been a problem for decades. It could be that the timing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg's death and the fallout from it are a blessing in disguise. Circumstances seem to be coalescing into the perfect storm that finally will allow us to deal with the issue.

There will be lots of "wait and see" and "don't rock the boat" that will need to be overcome.

I'm all for pushing the envelope within the first 100 days, if we retake the Senate. Get as much done as possible while people are fired up about it.

I would hate it 100%, but it's within the rules.

But not only did the GOP block President Obama's pick for nearly a year instead of a few months, it's the exact same damn smug asshole! Not just the same party but the same guy! That's what makes it utterly inexcusable and despicably hypocritical.
