Property taxes are definitely my favorite of the taxes we pay - I am wealthy enough to even own property and a big chunk of it is going towards educating my neighbors’ children, which always benefits everyone.

what my taxes does for our state. That being said, I am not wealthy and presently am without work cause of covid. It was a shocker, but I am good. And good is just that, lol. No need for fear, all is fine, lol. Now I am playing cause a couple days ago I had conversation with both sons that still, all is ok. That panic hits every once in a while.

But I still love living here. I was just happy my property taxes only went up $80 this year. Maybe the fires in the area nearby kept values down a bit.

I waited til middle of Nov to pay, and tried to talk to someone about amount, but I would have to make an appt and didn't bother. But, it seemed they were saying the previous year was just under 3k. I had seen it on some record when I bought it. Then mine had jumped over 3600. How exactly does that calculation of property tax work, do you know? I have been going to ask around and just haven't gotten onto it.

And have some formula you would have to call. Sometimes it takes a jump first year because people who owned it before underpaid what it should be.

Mine went from $3140 to $3220, I always pay full year on my own to get discount. I save myself don't like how bank takes money out in extra months advance. You have to own more of house before they let you do it yourself.

On a flight back from Portland in 2011, I sat next to an older business man from Washington state. He mentioned how Oregon has property tax but no sales tax while Washington has sales tax but no property tax.

"Alabama has both property taxes and sales taxes," I replied.

His eyebrows lifted. "Really? I thought Alabama was supposed to be conservative," he said in shock.

I just shrugged. What I didn't elucidate was that the sales taxes are unusually high and the property taxes low to force more of the burden on lower socio-economic classes, as well and that it actually goes hand-in-hand with the type of cultural and economic conservatism Alabama embraces.

In states like you mention, infrastructure isn't well maintained.

The public education system also lags, creating the kind of ambivalent, complacent society that is easily exploited to the benefit of the ruling class. If it's anything like Alabama, a sense of hopelessness permeates those denizens to the degree they don't value the arts/culture, detracting from the standard of living and don't really care about environmental issues either.

It really ricochets throughout a society.

about registering and I told her I wanted to, just had not gotten around to it. What did I have to do. Old and don't like hard. Well, they had send out the registration pamphlet, I had it in a pile and she stayed on the phone and walked me thru being so so so nice all the way thru. It was very simple and she did not need to. And explained about voting. It was all very positive.

Yes, what is there not to love about Oregon. Truly. Better Mexican food in the SW. I guess there is that.
