Former GOP congressional candidate Richard May becomes a Democrat out of dismay with Trump and endor
WASHINGTON, D.C. - A former Cuyahoga County Republican party activist who ran for Congress against Toledo Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur in 2014 announced Thursday that hes changed his political party affiliation to Democrat and will vote for both Kaptur and former Vice President Joe Biden in November.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Richard May, a retired warehouse worker who lives in the West Park section of Cleveland, said he changed his party affiliation out of disgust with President Donald Trump. In addition to holding several posts in the Cuyahoga County Republican Party and running against Kaptur, May formerly headed a Tea Party group called the Cleveland Conservative Network.
Trumps bigotry is now embedded into the Republican Party and will not be removed in our lifetimes, wrote May, who got 32 percent of the vote against Kaptur in the 2014 general election. Worse, he will be honored by Republicans alongside Reagan and Goldwater regardless of what is revealed of his presidency for generations to come even if he loses horribly on Election Night.
In an interview, May said he was upset by Trumps portrayal of Mexicans as rapists and killers, his policies of separating immigrant families at the border, and his coziness with Russia. Because Trump has taken over the party, May feels he has to leave. May says he voted for Libertarian Gary Johnson in 2016, but registered as a Democrat this time around and voted for Biden in Ohios Democratic presidential primary.
