I know nothing lasts forever, but the really great cartoonists are supposed to last for at least until I'm long since dead and gone.

In any case, it's not going to replace Tom Toles.

Enjoy retirement, Mr. Toles!

....Uncle Sam character approaching an airport ticket counter right after 9/11. There were two signs above the counter, right and left, that said "Freedom" on one side and "Security" on the other. The little cartoonist figure in the lower corner was just saying "Careful" as Sam was contemplating his choice. We weren't careful and we ended up with ICE and Dept. of Homeland Security.

Will he find himself, at odd hours during the day, just cracking up at some thought that's raced through his brain? Will he make private comics for his friends and family? Or will he simply walk away and never give it a second thought?

Can't imagine. But then, I can't imagine completely retiring from what I do. Even when I'm no longer doing projects for paying clients, I'll continue to volunteer my talents to those who'll benefit.

Thanks for all the laughs, Tom. Hope we'll still see you from time to time.
