How do you think the Eastern Bloc saw that?
Who's gonna' stand up for whom?
Any weakness in an alliance is an opening for any foreign intervention.
Any show of disrespect towards any member shows disrespect for the entire group.

Changes in "attitudes" and relations between adversaries can be small and miniscule - but changes do mean different attitudes and policies - and all of that can lead to confrontation, and yes, conflict and death.

Just one small step - one small crack............. past enemies have seen them and used them.
