on him" while the cameras rolled---can we call them something other than "Christians"?
I have known several GENUINE Christians in my three score and ten---plus---and we elected one to the White House in 1976. You can agree or disagree with their motivation, but few will disagree that people like James Earl Carter are GOOD people who make this world a better place by the way they live and how they treat others. These folks merit the name "Christian".
To call those who claim divine authority for their greed and racism and misogyny and homophobia and cruelty "Christian" is the very definition---IMHO---of blasphemy.
So, call them evangelical entrepreneurs or devout haters or biblical profiteers but, please, do not pay them the compliment of equating them with Jimmy.

(14,856 posts)The definition of "Christian" is not "a good, decent, moral person".

(14,856 posts)You don't get to redefine Christianity so as to exclude anyone whose behavior you don't like.
Trump got the majority of the Christians' votes in 2016. He could not have won without such massive support from Christians, and they should not be deprived of their fair share of the credit for his catastrophic presidency. There's a very good chance he'll get the majority of the Christians' votes again in 2020. We'll find out very soon.

(12,650 posts)It may be hypocritical of them but they use the concept of Hell and Salvation as a method to control the desperate. While they also throw out promises of privilege and eventual wealth through "God's Blessings" for the lazy and/or greedy.
Bible passages and the range of philosophies that Christianity can support are just tools to them. It's a brand, and they're just selling knockoffs in a marketplace of social communities.
That or they are really mentally unwell and are looking for some sort of self-validation through control of others.
But they are the ones insisting they're Christian. And unfortunately, the truth of their beings and self-labeling doesn't matter what I may say or think, it's what they say they are and what they do that indicates their personal truth. They claim to be Christian, even though it's pretty obvious they follow Beezalbub or Mammon. Not judging, mind you, just pointing out their obvious discrepancies between Words and Deeds.
But since those two agents of the Demiurge are also a part of Judeo-Christian theology throughout history, there is some association with Christianity that cannot be denied. Sorry.

(11,949 posts)Claiming Devine authority for their greed and racism and misogyny and homophobia and cruelty pretty much wraps up the history of Christianity. I used to be one. Read the Bible multiple times. Every Christian I grew up with expressed one of the mentioned flaws.
Its all right there in the Bible for anyone to read.
That said, I have good liberal friends who are self professed Christians. Mainly because they have figured out a way to ignore what the Bible actually says. But they, and I assume you, are a minority.
Most people who attend church weekly fully believe in one or more of the vices you mentioned. Not all. But a majority. No wonder 30% and going up fast are not religious at all.
