Like I tell my sons, a good understanding of basic math - including fractions, decimals, and percentages - is like having a superpower in this country. (And if you can master statistics, you're basically Dr. Manhattan.)

I've been teaching math for 30 years, and believe me, I know! It's not just basic calculations that people can't do, it's more that they have no "number sense," that is, they don't understand how numbers work.

Most Americans also don't know how taxes work. They think that if you earn enough to get into the next tax bracket, that ALL of your income is now subject to the higher tax rate. I have almost given up trying to explain how marginal taxes work!

"I borrowed $1,000 and I've made ten payments of $100 each. Why are you saying I still owe money ?!?!?"

"GDP fell by 32% in 2Q, but then it increased by 32% in 3Q. Why are you saying we're still under water?"

"If I say I'm using this truck 100% for business, then I can write it off and it's essentially free, right?"
