Seems like a fitting end to this election. It appears we knocked out the orange menace, which is ultimately all that matters, but good God America why was it so close?! I think when all is said and done we will say "Trump really wasn't going to win" and I am aware how difficult it is to defeat an incumbent president but this never should have been a narrow Dem victory. A win is a win but man this country is fucked in the head.

(1,665 posts)I do not believe that after 4 years of this, this many people said: Heck yah! Sign me up! I didnt vote for this Trump guy before, but him and his asshole followers really grew on me! I wanna be a part of that!

(2,017 posts)I was telling people for two plus years Trump loses in a landslide because there is no way he picks up millions of voters who didn't vote for him in 2016. I still can't buy it. It makes no sense on any level.

(115,971 posts)It's not just the Electoral College, which sucks hard enough to bend light, but the whole piecemeal, inconsistent, dumb way of voting and counting votes which is different in every single fucking state! Getting rid of the EC would be a good start, but having 50 different election processes is still stupid and makes no sense.

(3,248 posts)I hate the way EC isn't even handled the same way in all states. It is a mess!

(5,738 posts)Its The United States of America not America.
The electoral college came with that package deal.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,971 posts)was to ensure, as part of a compromise, that southern states could count their slaves (at 3/5) as part of their population that determined how many electoral votes they would have. In considerable part the EC is a relic of slavery; even now its effect is to give low-population states more voting power than high-population states.

(5,738 posts)You can bet the Republicans would gladly get rid it ASAP!

(1,663 posts)However, the electoral college makes it the nail biter scenario we're experiencing. This needs to be reformed.

(7,596 posts)Hes not a normal Republican president and normal rules shouldnt apply to him.
Hes a bigoted, dictator-admiring, racist, hate-spewing, thug-enabling, incompetent, embarrassing, misogynistic imbecile who also happens to be a credibly accused sexual predator. It should have been a no-brainer that this walking freak-show shouldnt be POTUS. The fact that were probably only going to beat him by the skin of our teeth is a goddamn disgrace and a damning indictment of over 40% of America.
Even if he loses, these results have convinced me that this country is in deep trouble and sends me a feeling of utter dread concerning its future.

(43,723 posts)10 to 15 or so seats gained in the House to perhaps 10 lost
so a Biden POTUS is ratfucked from the start
no court nominees will be approved, not SCOTUS, and likely no lower benches
no ACA replacement
no major programmes at all
no environmental protections, minimum wage increase, etc etc unless Joe goes full blast executive orders (and which the SCOTUS may strike down)
obviously no end of the filibuster, no SCOTUS expansion, no lower judiciary expansion
and Biden will get blamed and we could actually LOSE seats in the 2022 Senate midterms, when it looked like we might win 2 to 4 more

(4,316 posts)It seems to me to be deep denial and gives me some insight as to just how much into denial really well intentioned, thoughtful people can be, or just can't call a spade a spade. Also that a large segment of our population has no problem with having a psychopath as a leader.
