When the leading topic in exit polling was "Strong leader".
Far too many of our country believes that bullying, screaming and violence equates to "strength". A large percentage of those call themselves "Christian", even though that faith makes it clear that this is not strength.
The GOP has spent decades and billions reinforcing these stereotypes, and Trump is but a symptom of the larger disease. We see it everywhere, from our selections of sports and movies, to our selections of leaders ... even when we know it is agasint our own interests.
The question now is, even with Biden as President, how do we change that?

(7,947 posts)I think we just need to soldier on and, well, ignore them.
The Senate is going to be a problem, but "Sufficient onto the day is the evil therein."
That is, we got enough to worry about right now.

(9,760 posts)"unto" the day? Typo? Anyway, I never understood what that saying meant. You're saying it means not to worry about more than...what? The first problem? The worst problem?

(7,947 posts)I always took it to mean that we have enough to deal with with the known problems today, and we can reserve the non-certain one for later.

(9,760 posts)It becomes even clearer when seen with the words that precede it. According to Wiktionary
From the King James Version of the Christian bible's original Greek "ἀρκετὸν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἡ κακία αὐτῆς" as it appears in Matthew, Chapter VI, 34.
Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself: sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
Parallel rabbinical expression in the Babylonian Talmud, דיה לצרה בשעתה: "sufficient is the trouble of the hour".
Proverb
sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof
No need to worry about the future; the present provides enough to worry about.
Thanks for inspiring me to finally learn about this phrase I've always liked the sound of, but wasn't sure I had any real idea of what was meant by it.
Now, if I can only live by it!

(9,760 posts)Unfortunately, I have little hope for change. That crap is profitable and that's really all that matters to the majority of those with power.
The media & entertainment industies wield so much influence, yet they mostly cater to the lowest common denominator.

(13,783 posts)... a young, rather clean cut looking guy at a motorcycle get together was interviewed about Trump. He said he liked Trump because he was (can't remember the words, but "macho" sums it up). He looked gleeful when asked about Trump's lies. There's definitely a contingent (larger and larger than I had thought) that like Trump BECAUSE of his style and not in spite of it.
One way to start changing it is to name it. This has begun to happen. A number of books have been written on the subject. I despair, of course, about anything that depends on education, but it's a start.

(999 posts)Characters that are brash, that shoot from the hip, that don't let authority stop them, that do whatever they think is right without regarding other people's objections.
Thus, Americans have been trained to praise such characters through fiction, and thus Trump takes advantage of it.
Most. And then there's football, wrestling and so on. It's not just fiction.
It's a part of our culture, and has been for generations. The GOP is feeding on the evil, and revelling in it.
