The best goddam political discussion board I am aware of.

Last edited Sat Nov 7, 2020, 11:45 PM - Edit history (1)

Seriously, there is no real time better news/analysis then what happens at DU. Been here since WTF Happened in FL in 2000. Some really smart people post here and my hat is off to the best progressive US board on the internet. DU has been the place to be during the entire election process.....as it has always been. I always would prefer listening to brief points by a bunch of great posters than a TLDR opus from a hack that is no smarter the rest of us. I get the real story when I read 50 different opinions on any latest news event as it happens.

My goto sanity and real time group therapy site for 20 years (and it's free).....but you contribute because you appreciate this internet oasis that DU is.

Best regards, admins!

On edit: Blown away by the responses. Thanks all. We all get it. DU is a resource worth supporting!

IIRC, there was a MAJOR upgrade to the site that required a reboot of posters.
That's why someone like me, (started here the 3rd month) no longer has the exact join date.
Everyone got a "before 200x" type of member start date.
I don't remember if the post count started over.
My post count now is decent, but I racked up way more posts since I retired a couple years ago. I don't remember if I lost those first few years of posts or not.
All the older stuff is archived somewhere, but since I've never even tried to look, I couldn't tell you how to find them.

Back during the GW time there were some trolls on here and I got into some really heated debates with them.

I am normally a peaceful type person but some folks were justifying racist teachers down south, FL I think, calling the police and putting a 5 year old girl in the back of a squad car because her Mom had put a "do not spank" notation in her file. The woman either couldn't leave work right away when they called her or could but had a couple of buses to catch to get to the school, so that was their solution.

I know that one set me off. I was like a bazooka. I am a Mama Bear protecting kids and they don't have to be "mine" to be "mine" if someone is dumb enough to do stupid to them in front of me.

It's ok that me is archived. I hope, I think I have better self control now.

Maturity is a good thing, right?

EDIT: Then I look at my sig pic.

THAT IS HOW I FEEL
ABOUT ALL THE LIES AND DESTRUCTION BEING DONE

So when I deal with the other side, I ... I just try not to.

I would not come here if it was a monolith. Not my scene. I want a diversity of opinions. Anything else is boring. I hate with a passion bias confirmation.

DU challenges me to rethink my opinion. If you think your opinion is always correct you are not thinking.

That info is in my bio... I am a San Francisco native born. My parents are mixed NATIVE HAWAIIAN AND Japanese. Yoshida is a Japanese last name.

I only know a teensie tiny bit of Mandarin because, I grew up in a Chinese neighborhood and because some of my best friends that I grew up with are Chinese. Like Juju, she was born in Malaysia but she lives in San Diego. My family immigrated to HAWAII during the 1800's to work the Sugar Cane fields in Hawaii along with many other immigrants. My family married into a native Hawaiian family, which kept them safe during World War II...because back then Hawaiians still OWNED Hawaii long before it was a state. OH, and I can speak Japanese or other wise known as Nihongo.

Still...a post of mine was hidden by a jury a couple of days ago because I said I was pessimistic about our ability to prevail based on how fickle and fucked up the voters can be. (This was while the toss-up states were still counting and things were even closer than today.)

I mentioned that Miami-Dade went for Hillary by a margin of 30, but went for Biden by a margin of only 7, largely because of single issue Cuban voters spazzing out over Biden's policy to change Cuba through engagement rather than continuing the still ineffective embargo.

The jury hid it for - get this - promoting right wing talking points!

As awesome as DU is, and as grateful as I am for EarlG and former owner Skinner for bring it to us, there's still a streak of butt-hurt among some DU members that gets translated into mob rule. I hope DU will fix the jury system in the future.

And not so good ones too just to round out their perspective. I’d not want to imagine we would be what we are without journalists out their doing the lifting.

Back to the love, yes indeed, DU you are made of wisdom.

It is like having a thousand researchers as my friends. It is impossible to gather the information by yourself that is provided daily by our fellow members.

I joined DU in 2003. It lies at the center of my information universe, and has been there now for all of those 17 years. I honestly can't imagine my life now without it. DU, and all those who are part of it, is that important to me.

104. I like the political chat section of alternatehistory.com.

It leans overwhelmingly left, although a wide range of political views are allowed, short of such bannable offenses such as denying or advocating genocide, kooky conspiracy theories, etc. Notably, it's much more heavily moderated the DU. Attacking other members is not permitted, one is lucky to get off with a warning for a first offense (being prohibited from posting for a week is more common). Repeat offenses will get one banned. It is, one the whole, quite a civil place.

They also have more knoweldge of real history (as opposed to counterfactual) than any board I've ever seen. It's quite refreshing to chat where virtually everyone knows just why Operation Sea Lion was doomed from the start, and where a discusiion of the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922 will bring in dozens of posters discussing the merits of varioius interwar battleships.

That being said, DU is certainly a valuable place to get news and opinion that's exclusively left wing.

Local news tends to regurgitate US news as though it's Solid Gold.

DU cuts through multiple layers of bias and editorial preferences.

Some fanciful thinking and conspiracy theories bandied about at times, so thinking cap on when reading some DU threads.
