(10,053 posts)Election result certification deadlines are set in state law. Certification deadlines for the 2020 election are as follows:
The certification deadline in six states is within one week of the election.
In 26 states and the District of Columbia, the certification deadline is between November 10 and November 30.
In 14 states, the certification deadline is in December.
Four states (Hawaii, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Tennessee) do not have statutory deadlines for results certification.

(19,264 posts)and most have provisions for extensions if votes are still being counted. With the high number of mail in ballots most states are likely going to be slower than normal this year. Only ONE state (DE) has passed its deadline and it has reported it still has ballots to count so it can't certify yet. You can't certify what isn't done right? The rest have through today although once again with ballots still uncounted in virtually every state except there to be delays.
VA board of elections is meeting this evening although with there still being a few uncounted ballots they likely will not certify anything tonight even though the law says they should.
The only date which is hard deadline is Dec 6th. All states must file with Congress that they have a final certified count and complete any and all recounts and resolve all legal challenges by then. If they haven't they have to file with Congress exactly what the issue is and their plan to have is resolved prior to Dec 14th when electors are seated.
