Reminder to those saying withdrawing troops may cause a clash with Generals/Pentagon: there is only one Commander in Chief, it is @realDonaldTrump and when he orders the troops out of Afghanistan, the only proper answer is Yes sir.

(12,375 posts)so the CIC can't order him to do anything, and, unfortunately, he is right, there is only one Commander in Chief and at this moment, it's the Pissolini,

(6,357 posts)And we only have one at a time. As we have always said, the 70-80 days between losing the election and inauguration were going to be the most dangerous times in this generation. He's certainly not disappointing but, to paraphrase Joe, we only have one at a time for reason.

(82,849 posts)How about the orders of a commander-in-chief who has deserted his post during a national pandemic? What does your extensive military service* tell you about that?
*Trick question: Rand Paul never served in the military.

(6,234 posts)The bottom line is hard to read, but I think it says Engineer Equipment Operator? So is it the 1345th Battalion or Regiment or something similar?

(32,626 posts)and that whole grand chessboard thingy. The thing about the Pentagon etal., is much like the Republican Party. I never believe a word, and don't have a real handle on who's pulling the strings.

(32,017 posts)Our allies depend upon it. It brings natural gas out of Uzbekistan and Kazakistan to the Indian Ocean and onto the global market (without it having to go through Russia). The creation and maintenance of this pipeline are the only GOOD reasons that we went into Afghanistan in the first place.

Of course, you don't say it to Trump's face. But you make things *not happen*.
dware
(12,375 posts)but the simple fact is that there is only one CiC, and, unfortunately for the nation and the world,
it's Pissolini.
You are right though, the JCoS can discreetly order their subordinate officers to slow walk the withdrawal, thereby giving time for cooler heads to take over, as in, President Biden.

dware
(12,375 posts)I haven't heard what his positions are on foreign policy, though from his past performance, his #1 preference is diplomacy, not military action.

Under The Radar
(3,401 posts)....that we are never leaving Afghanistan. We have built 6 permanent military bases, staffed by 10,000 troops not including civilian contractors, there that protect US interest.
[link:https://militarybases.com/overseas/afghanistan/|
Iraq has 12 US military bases and 5000 troops.
We still have 38,000 troops in Japan, 34,000 in Germany and 24,000 on South Korea.
We may not call ourself an imperialist nation but we sure do act like one.
OAITW r.2.0
(24,468 posts)Yeah, that won't happen.
That said,if Trump orders troops to exit Afghanistan, it might be the only military action that I would support...it might actually be one less headache for a new Biden administration to have to deal with. There is no military solution that will bring "democracy" to this country.

I will say that it is beyond absurd that we still have troops in Afghanistan. Not to mention some 800 military bases around the world.

(18,648 posts)There would be nothing illegal about an order to leave Afghanistan, that I am aware of.
The military would be remiss in their duty, however, if they did not at least offer advice on potential repercussions of a sudden withdrawal.
