President-elect Joe Biden's team has had initial discussions with people who worked for former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis about helping with the transition at the Pentagon and possibly serving in the new administration, according to three people familiar with the move.
The conversations are in the early stages, particularly as President Donald Trump has so far blocked the start of the official transition process, said the people, all former Trump administration officials who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive personnel issues.
Biden is aiming to build an effective, bipartisan Defense Department leadership team, said one former Trump Pentagon official. The Biden team will in the coming weeks be reaching out to more former officials who were appointed by Mattis to talk about the transition and potentially serving, the person said.
The team is also seeking the former officials' help because they dont expect current Pentagon leadership to be cooperative or particularly knowledgeable, the former official said.

Remember when Mattis resigned he said Trump was the first president he'd known who tried to divide America instead of unite it.

(149,614 posts)I am glad to see Biden reaching out to him. Perhaps he might join the Administration. Mattis has to know that Biden would treat him with the respect that he deserves.
Here's hoping!

(35,667 posts)and he has been contacting some of them. Either way, things are moving ahead, despite Trumpty-Dumpty's great (ego) fall.
I got this information from an interview done with the new chief-of-staff, Ronald Klain.

(90,677 posts)...how things operate. He may be frustrated by Trumps stalling, but I think he & his aides will work around it as much as humanly possible because he and they know how.
As far as contact with foreign leaders goes, I think that like the Pope, they will certainly figure out how to reach him.
The other day the Los Angeles Times did a big article in Kamala Harris being one of our own (yay!) & it featured a large photo of her with Biden, both of them looking very presidential. My immediate response to seeing that was to say: She is so lucky he is going to give her a master class on running the US government. Talk about paying it forward!
