It was written when times were totally different to today. There was no internet with social media for example. Also, there are many protocols that in recent times have not been followed. They need to be made into law. Also, there should be a law that a president should not be allowed to pardon anybody when he is in a lame duck period.
At the moment, the world is watching in abject horror as to what's happening in your country.

(33,357 posts)We'll get right on it when we have 2/3 of the Senate & 2/3 of the State Legislatures and Governors. Shouldn't be long.

(16,616 posts)No matter how good the Constitution is, it doesn't work when people of malign intent and bad faith get into political positions of power. When that happens, Constitutions, amendments and laws are just marks on a piece of paper.
And you've probably noticed, this is also happening in Hungary, Poland, and other nations as well.
So maybe we can learn a few tricks from the EU if they can figure out how you tackle a situation like this when the truth simply has no meaning.

(15,253 posts)You're right that even a very good Constitution can simply be ignored, but the tipping point where the system breaks down can be made tougher to reach.
It's too bad that this is largely a moot point since we're nowhere near to votes we'd need in Congress or in state legislatures to change much.
One slim hope I'd have is that constitutional amendments to improve oversight of the executive branch, and the independence of the Justice Department, could be accomplished if Democrats support them, and Republicans can be convinced to look at such changes in terms of the short-term benefit of limiting Biden's power.

I was looking at how difficult it is to amend the Constitution.

Maybe over time the Republican party will recede and become a fringe party, like has happened in some European countries (although, it's scary how large some of them are, and some are growing bigger).

(13,536 posts)agree about no pardons in a lame duck session, nor should judges be voted on by the senate during that period. There should be no firings either after a presidential election by the outgoing president unless someone did something obviously illegal.
