https://www.wsoctv.com/news/local/many-finding-out-landlords-wont-take-nc-hope-rent-money-dont-have/SUBMMUMWCBA3JBIFCSAVY37PLA/?outputType=ampHUNTERSVILLE, N.C. Many are finding out that, even if they qualify for the NC HOPE program, which will pay up to six months of their rent, their landlords dont have to take the money. Many landlords are not.
If landlords take the money, they have to follow certain rules, so many dont feel its worth it. Landlords who take HOPE money cant do certain things, like raise rent for the rest of the renters lease, charge the renter new fees or penalties, or evict the renter for not paying rent for the rest of the lease -- or 90 days after the HOPE money ends -- whichever is longer.
Kurt Bradley lives in Huntersville. I paid half of August, and then I havent paid September, October or November, he told Action 9′s Jason Stoogenke. So he applied for HOPE money and says he qualified. I was so elated when I got the approval in the mail, he said.
But his landlord, Southwood Realty Company, wouldnt take the money. The company told Stoogenke the rules put a tremendous burden on property management companies.

when the road blocks are a feature and not a glitch. The whole profit over people and treatment of the poor and struggling leaves me livid.
I could go on and on on the subject.

It should be illegal to not accept this rent assistance.
But instead, the corporate "person" gets to choose others' fate!

(15,292 posts)5. Same reason landlords don't like "Section 8"
tenants, too many "rules" (like ensuring a habitable and safe rental unit) come attached to taking the money.
