New: The Supreme Court has released new "circuit assignments." Each justice initially handles emergency appeals that arise from the area covered by their assigned circuit(s). Barrett gets her old court: the 7th Circuit. Sotomayor takes over the 2nd Circuit (previously Ginsburg).

Here's a handy map showing the geographical areas covered by each of the circuits:

Yes. Redo the districts to even out the population they serve, and 1 justice per district. groundloop Nov 2020 #7

the evidence is clear that we need to add four new justices to SCOTUS, so that none has to work more than one circuit.

(And so that stolen seats are balanced out.)

There may be good reasons for increasing the number of justices, but circuit assignments isn't one of them. This isn't a big deal at all.

Every time a justice diea or retires, they reassign Circuit Justices duties.

Ginsburg's death opened up the Second Circuit and Sotomayor was assigned it since that's the circuit she previously served in. That opened up the 10th Circuit, which Gorsuch took and they gave Barrett the 7th Circuit, where she was previously

This is all much ado about nothing.

In my view it's time to increase the number of SCOTUS justices to correspond with the number of circuit court districts.

Just look at the population of the 9th vs some of the others.

Especially after the Pubs unexpectedly strong showing this month. They will get control again someday, and we should be taking steps to remove court packing as an option, not setting a precedent.

At least so far, trump's judges haven't really hurt us. Doubt that will last, but they haven't jumped in to declare him the winner as many thought, and they didn't sound particularly keen on declaring the ACA unconstitutional.

There should probably be more circuits, too, breaking up the larger ones and re-aligning things by population distribution.
