Aleksei Raksha, an independent demographer in Moscow, who was fired from Rosstat predicts 500,000 deaths from covid in Russia. Putin's regime tried to cover up the cases/deaths but it is getting more difficult with the widespread horror

I have been following this since the winter and fear it is even more because they never reported the cases accurately. Many deaths were listed as pneumonia or not counted at all. This wave is so much worse and the images/videos coming out are beyond a nightmare

(25,906 posts)As it is, a century after the 1918 flu epidemic, the actual number of deaths is still being debated.

(3,697 posts)I'm looking at you Florida and Texas. El Paso is storing excess bodies in refrigerated trucks yet they they continue to report really low daily death counts.

(25,906 posts)There's always a lag in reporting, but I'm inclined to believe that for the most part the reporting is accurate.
There are places where funerals and burials just aren't taking place, so bodies need to be stored if they're not being cremated. And our entire morgue and funeral industry is built around the normal number of daily deaths. Any kind of a spike overwhelms the system.
And bringing in the trucks is a sensible thing to do, to get ahead of a higher body count.
And even if Texas and Florida are seriously underreporting, I'll go with most states are doing a fairly accurate job.
