Blowback from the Cold War policy of supporting extremely brutal dictators. A case of the enemy of my enemy is my friend gone horribly wrong. Our support of Saddam's Iraq in the 80's came from the multi administration hostility towards Iran, until that counter weight to Iranian power blew up in our faces not once, but twice. In response to our hostility, Iran sought the ultimate regime insurance policy...nuclear weapons. Both sides have made terrible mistakes over the decades and now we find ourselves here.
