Weekend air travel hits pandemic-era record, despite health officials' pleas to stay home

Warnings from public health officials not to travel for Thanksgiving didn't stop passengers from packing US airports and planes this weekend.

From Friday to Sunday, more than 3 million people passed through airport security checkpoints in the United States — a record weekend for air travel since the pandemic hit in March. Sunday was the biggest day for air travel since March 16, with 1.05 million people screened.

US health officials have pleaded with the American public not to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday this week as new Covid-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths soar. Friday saw a one-day record of 196,000 new US cases, according to Johns Hopkins.

The airlines say that the cleaning procedures used between flights, the exchange of fresh air in the cabin throughout flights and the hospital-quality air filters now used on planes make it safe to fly. The airlines also require passengers to wear masks.

Great! COVID-19 numbers should be even higher by Christmas.

packed into airports, traveling all over the country and visiting relatives and others in large groups? That's the problem, not the airplanes.

As a species, humans might be too damn stupid to survive much longer. Evolution doesn't seem to be working very well when it comes to people.

you either mandate it or not. Americans cannot be trusted to act on "pleas" We've proved that. Spell it out, put some teeth in, lock up the spreaders as needed.

I don't get their line of thinking. Can they not skip one holiday to insure that they all get to celebrate together in the future?

The people traveling are risking themselves. It should weed out the people not heeding what the government says. Let them go, be around sick people, right? Why waste our time on these peasants, they will be sorted out.

Their parents, grandparents, other relatives and friends who didn't want that risk?

or going to any get-together with them. Unfortunately, a lot of people will happily go to a large Thanksgiving get together this year and then be so surprised when people start getting sick.

in that mix.

Quite a few universities changed up their terms to end right before thanksgiving. They won’t need to return until January.

Some of them have to fly home.
