IIRC, the proportions had some sort of significance.

"...it is found to be a black cuboid whose sides extend in the precise ratio of 1 : 4 : 9 (1² : 2² : 3²) and is sitting on a platform of the same material above undisturbed rock. So, if the truth be known the original monolith was to be made of Plexiglas. But Kubrick didn’t like it. The final version was said to be inspired by a pack of cigarettes.

16. Looks like it's not a solid chunk of steel, you can see screws along the edges.

So transporting the materials and putting them together wouldn't be as difficult as one big heavy chunk. And looking at different pictures it's triangular not square.
