MYSTERIOUS MONOLITH HAS BEEN THERE FOR YEARS, ACCORDING TO GOOGLE EARTH

Here it is on Google Earth: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/38.0737963,-109.351907/38.3430833,-109.6661944/

DU has at least one thread on this: https://www.democraticunderground.com/100214615006

Well, that was fast.

Over the weekend, a team of biologists discovered a bizarre metal monolith in the middle of the Utah wilderness, prompting real-world intrigue as well as humorous comparison’s to Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

It’s still a mystery as to who put it there or why — but a group of eagle-eyed Reddit users have already discovered the location of the monolith on Google Earth.

It may only be a matter of time until crowds show up to take a selfie with the unusual construct. But just so we’re clear, you probably shouldn’t visit — you’d only end up putting yourself and others in danger, not to mention needlessly bothering the nearby wildlife and traveling during a pandemic.

Rugged Hills
According to Google’s archive of satellite imagery, the monolith appears to have been erected at some point between August 2015 and October 2016, and is less than a mile away from what appears to be a trail.

A spokesperson for Utah’s Department of Public Safety speculated to The New York Times that it could have been there even longer, telling the paper that for “all we know it’s been installed since the ’40s and ’50s.”

“Somebody took the time to use some type of concrete-cutting tool or something to really dig down, almost in the exact shape of the object, and embed it really well,” the spokesperson added. “It’s odd. There are roads close by, but to haul the materials to cut into the rock, and haul the metal, which is taller than 12 feet in sections — to do all that in that remote spot is definitely interesting.”

They don’t corrode easily and the electro-polishing would make them almost bullet-proof to weather and wear.

Whoever did it knew their shit. That was not a simple feat. Maybe Aliens?

I really hope that people don’t try to go there by feet or vehicle, or even on helicopter tours. Just leave it be, let the wildlife that live around it live in peace.

There are some more recent Grades that are pretty awesome, but S304 and S311 are the workhorses for most applications.

Not all the photos capture it, but there are screw patterns viable on some photos. Still, it takes some chops to create it, as clean as it is.

demanding, that would take time and high-powered tools, how would someone get that type of stuff into a remote, difficult to access location? I would think that maybe helicopter it in, and bring some gas powered generators to supply power to cutting tools.

It would be nice if Structural Scientists go do a detail examination.

The mechanical precision described in the article makes it clear that this wasn't a "hand-job." The terrain is apparently very severe so driving in would've been nearly impossible. A helicopter sounds about right.

I'll bet it was some installation artist who wanted to create something wild. Half their creative fun was that no one would know where it came from and the artist wouldn't know how long it would take for it to be discovered. Think of the artist Cristo, for example, (although he's very determined that you know he created his works).

Bravo to the creator of the Utah Monolith!

When I drove thru Durango, then to this drive, then up to Green River, over to Salt Lake and then across Northern Nevada.

It's a surreal drive what with beautiful land formations and it is almost completely isolated. There were a few cars going up and driving back (the road ends at a little circle to turn back).

So are most of the elements that we are made of.

Joni Mitchell was 100% correct when she sang “we are star dust, billion year old carbon”

At least not without hazmat suits on.

And they definitely shouldn't taunt it
