The Senate majority leader, a powerful Republican from Kentucky, quickly reached President Donald Trump on the phone and made his plan clear, a FRONTLINE documentary reports.
McConnell told [Trump] two things, Josh Holmes, McConnells former chief of staff, told FRONTLINE in the above excerpt from Supreme Revenge: Battle for the Court. McConnell said, first, Im going to put out a statement that says were going to fill the vacancy. Second, he said, youve gotta nominate Amy Coney Barrett.
It was a very different approach than McConnell had taken four-and-a-half years prior, when he refused to allow the Senate to consider President Barack Obamas Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland, after Justice Antonin Scalia died more than eight months before the 2016 presidential election.

gratuitous
(82,849 posts)Kind of an understatement there. But really, why should the screaming hypocrisy of Republicans bother anyone? It's all a game and they follow the Vince Lombardi rule that winning isn't everything, it's the only thing. So the Supreme Court rules against citizens and in favor of corporate bigotry and discrimination; it's unlikely to affect the reporters at NPR (or anywhere else) directly. If it does, though, too bad. What's really important is corporate bottom lines, and you'll see that in the popular media coverage accorded to enactment of regulations on (for example) the financial industry and the enforcement of laws on the books reining in the worst excesses of corporate America.

a way for the GOP/Right Wing Billionaires to keep power despite being part of an ever shrinking
demographic population.
