One train of thought is that Trump would grant Pence a pardon and then resign making Pence the president. Then Pence would grant Trump a pardon before January 20th protecting Trump from Federal indictments.
Such an action by Pence would effectively finish his political career. He would lose any election as did President Ford in 1976. Pence would look like a total lackey and a political hack. He would certainly have a tough time in any future runs for office. whether or not to pardon Trump would be a complex and difficult decision to make.
My favorite scenario, which will NEVER happen, is that Trump pardons Pence then resigns. Pence, however, reneges on their deal and doesn't pardon Trump! That would be glorious! But it's never gonna happen.

Nothing else sticks to these guys. Not all the scandals, not 250,000+ dead Americans, not impeachment, not the grab em by the pussy tape, not calling service members suckers and losers, and not even denying reality.
Dont make the mistake thinking that what happened in 1976 is in any way applicable to 2020.

So doing something for Trump isn't going to hurt him anymore than if he didn't.

FORD, President of the United States, pursuant to the pardon power conferred upon me by Article II, Section 2, of the Constitution, have granted and by these presents do grant a full, free, and absolute pardon unto Richard Nixon for all offenses against the United States which he, Richard Nixon, has committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from January 20, 1969 through August 9, 1974.
