BREAKING: Iranian media reporting that high level nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh assassinated

Ali Arouzi
@aliarouzi
NBC News Tehran Bureau Chief & correspondent

BREAKING: Iranian media reporting that high level nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh has been assassinated. Widely referred to as Iran’s Robert Oppenheimer. He is by far the most important Iranian nuclear scientist to be assassinated to date. Netanyahu had mentioned him by name

Fakhrizadeh is about as high level a nuclear scientist as your going to find in Iran. He was also a high ranking IRGC officer and regarded in Iran expert in his field.

This is the scene where the apparent assassination took place in Damavand east of Tehran. Reports that Fakhrizadeh taken to hospital by helicopter. News outlets calling him a martyr. Iranian officials are almost certainly going to say this has US & Israeli hallmarks all over it.

Lovely.

details Mossad's plans to take out Iranian nuclear scientists. They did assassinate a number of them and the page closes by explaining that Fakhrizadeh was the scientist they were most worried about. Iran placed massive security around him. Meir Dagan was the brains behind the plan to assassinate the Iranian nuclear scientists. Dagan died in March 2016.

That's near the end of the book.

(It's a really good book, by the way)

@emptywheel

Normally one would assume that Mossad did this (with our tacit approval).

But given the purges Trump has put in place at DOD of late, can you really be sure we didn't do it?

Are we good at this type of thing?

The assassins actually got into Tehran. I find this quite interesting.

It looks from the photo like it was a vehicle to vehicle assassination. It could have been an explosive device, but I can't see anything blown up in the photo (of course it's hard to see because of the distance). Mossad is just so skilled at those type of hits.

I'm surprised he wouldn't be better protected if he was that important.
