No one really knows.
His tweet machine will continue non-stop. And he will announce many rallies for the faithful to attend. Will the numbers at his rallies stay the same or decline? Will his tweets still be followed as words "Handed down from The Mount?"
On the other hand, is Trump about to become our new Sarah Palin? (Remember her?) Will people begin to ignore him? He's already a punchline for late night comedians. Will treating him as a joke become a widespread national pastime?
We already know that American neo-Nazis (fascist groups that have various names) will stand by their Fuehrer forever. But they are actually a very small, almost insignificant portion of the population.
How about the millions of dyed-in-the-wool racists? As much as they've stuck by the orange imbecile, how long do you think it will be before we see another of his ilk start to spew shit in an attempt to seize the 2024 nomination. (I'm talking about people like Tom Cotton, Ted Cruz, and many other Republican pricks.)
I really don't know what the future holds for Trump, (other than countless lawsuits and perhaps prosecution by New York). But my guess is that his "true believers" will start dropping off and he'll be going the Sarah Palin route.
But that's just my opinion. What's yours?

(5,443 posts)Selfish cultists, mind you, who are already susceptible to believing Trump's every narrative. Trump is the cult leader. Unfortunately, his narrative is that he is the real President from whom the election was stolen. I personally believe he will attempt to be a shadow President, think Simple Simon, giving orders to his minions in Congress and his followers.

(69 posts)And I have shared, basically, this same outlook on them.
His followers are cult members and they don't even realize it.

(15,035 posts)What I'm about to say may sound condescending. And it is: A large majority of Trump's followers are incapable of critical thinking. If he isn't in front of them every day spouting fantasies, lies and shit, they will soon forget him. Their attention will turn to the next Republican prick to come down the pike peddling hatred, racism, and lies. Face it. We're not talking about people who give much thought to ... thinking.
They may be a cult, but they are one that will quickly accept a new loud, hateful bigot. They'll embrace him and he will soon become their new "Dear Leader."
And here's another statement that may go over as condescending: Never underestimate the incredible stupidity of ignorant people.
(Maybe I'm getting grumpy, but after four years of this creature -- that have not yet ended -- I'm pissed at each and every person who was mindless enough to buy the shit he was selling.)

(69 posts)But I do not believe that he'll go away, sadly. If the SDNY doesn't end up prosecuting or jailing him, I have a feeling Trump will work a deal with NewsMax or create his own "mainstream media" outlet and his subordinates are likely to drop everything and be "All Trump News Network, All the Time."
But goodness I hope you're right and I'm wrong!
And I definitely feel your pain - it has been the longest century in the last 4 years and I hope it just fades into the annals of US history.
Here's to hope: CHEERS!

(15,035 posts)Why would a Trump network be any different?
Yes, he has a great opportunity here to build a tremendous propaganda outlet equal to, or better than Fox.
But he'll fuck it up, and here's why. He doesn't listen to anyone. He doesn't listen to experienced people, he doesn't listen to media professionals, he doesn't listen to anyone who knows what they're talking about. He listens to himself and himself only. "Any Trump News Network, All the Time" is doomed before it starts.
Unlike Midas, everything Trump touches turns to dust.
And I appreciate your statement that this has been the longest century in the last 4 years. I once spent a year one night in an (intentionally unnamed) southern airport on a layover because there was an election going on and all the bars were closed.
CHEERS back at ya', Op-ed Daily.

(5,443 posts)to use as a platform-- it may even be a new virtual network on the internet, if he can't swing a network deal. It's not just for political control, it's really for his ego. He is addicted to the adulation: he needs Trump TV. Probably will have rallies as well.
You put this very well. I believe he will fall by the wayside. He has too much negative baggage to be forgotten for a while. So, he will be in the news, but as the butt of jokes and how clumsily and dishonestly he has dealt with life for most of his life. 80,000,000 people are seeing him for who he really is. A farce.

Like Palin, he eventually will be forgotten, but his base will probably find another freak to worship and follow. It might take longer than with Palin though, as he has had front stage for much longer and exerted more influence.

(7,952 posts)The last 2 days CNN has been showing his ugly mug nonstop. I pray they get over their obsession on January 20th. They are asking over and over whether he'll attend the inauguration. I hope he doesn't.
If MSM ignores him when he's gone he'll get much less attention at home and abroad while others like Pompeo and Cotton will beef up their 2024 campaigns and distract from his desperate attention-seeking.

(69 posts)Donald Trump created a cult of people who have been, quite literally, willing to die from COVID for this man. Not only are they willing to die for him, but they're willing to expose their own family members to it, all for Trump.
That level of control and ability to manipulate someone - based 100% on lies, fan-fiction, and nonsensical conspiracies - leads to basically one outcome: the ability to control them for the rest of his days.
I'm afraid we're stuck with this man for a while.

This kind of ignorance/insanity is incomprehensible to any human being who can think.

Yes, they were willing to die for this man because HE told them it was a hoax and his gatekeepers kept pushing it.
Semantics, but they will do what he says and believe what he says.
Look at this election - ZERO evidence, but Dump says it, so they obey.

(1,686 posts)A joke to people with a brain. After he gets thrown out of office, hell be a laughing stock making a fool of himself. When anything important crops up, from noon on Jan 21st forward, all eyes and ears will be on Joe and no one will GAF what this jerk off has to say.

(9,175 posts)Twitter. He will no longer have world leader status. Im sure Twitter will give him more leeway than the average schmo, but Trump will not be able to follow the rules. Once hes off Twitter (if that does indeed happen) his ability to reach the cult will be sharply limited, and I think Fox is moving away from him. I guess well see if Parler, Newsmax and OAN have the same reach.

(1,537 posts)But now I don't. He'll leave the office. But the office will never leave him. He'll claim Biden was illegally voted in and take that to his grave. He's losing support but the ones left will be very vocal.

(15,212 posts)Trump is even more significant in American history than the McCarthy era for uncovering the dark side of American politics.
We can not, and should not, forget Trump, how much damage he has done to our country, how much worse it could have been, and the lurking danger if another Trump-like figure comes along with just a bit more intelligence and self control.
Many institutional weaknesses have been revealed, as well as a dangerous level of ignorance and anti-democratic sentiment in the general population. It won't be easy to fix these problems, but we'd better hope we find a way, or democracy won't last much longer.

(12,618 posts)But his cult will be very much still around. It will simply morph into something else.
The only way to beat it will be to build and maintain a larger coalition than them and vote in every election. The good news is we have the numbers to do that.
