Texas man found dead in woods could have been killed by mountain lion

(Guardian UK) A 28-year-old man found dead in a wooded area in rural Texas was killed by a wild animal, possibly a mountain lion, according to local county officials.

The Hood county sheriff’s office said on Saturday that deputies found Christopher Allen Whiteley’s body on Thursday, a day after he went missing near Lipan, located 50 miles (80km) south-west of Fort Worth.

The sheriff’s office said the Tarrant county medical examiner’s office conducted an autopsy and issued a preliminary finding that an animal attacked and killed Whiteley.

Sheriff’s office deputies, Texas game wardens and a US department of agriculture trapper with expertise in “tracking and removing” mountain lions were trying to locate the animal. ....................(more)

LIPAN, Texas -- Texas wildlife officials on Sunday said there was no evidence that a mountain lion or any wild animal killed a 28-year-old man, disputing a medical examiner's preliminary finding in the case.

“It appears we have two conflicting reports from two agencies that are experts in their field,” the Hood County Sheriff's Office said in a statement Sunday posted on Facebook.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department said in a Sunday afternoon statement that its experts had inspected the scene and didn't find any evidence of a mountain lion attack at the location.

“None of the evidence reviewed by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department indicates a predatory attack by a mountain lion or other wild animal,” TPWD spokeswoman Megan Radke said in an email.

TPWD said that a U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services biologist also came to the same conclusion as its staff.

People in Texas get rather freaked out about "potential mountain lions". If you want schools to close, don't mention Covid, mention that a potential mountain lion was spotted in the area....(Bobcats are common here!!..Hello!!...) Seriously the media goes crazy when someone spots a bobcat and mistakes it for a mountain lion and then tells everyone to shelter in the place..duh...

Now this sheriff up in Hood County is telling everyone to shelter in place cuz of this guy.

This man was more much likely mauled by feral hogs than a mountain lion.

Officially they are extinct in the East, but people continue to have sightings of them. People were reporting many sightings in 2011 and the state constantly denied they existed in the state until a Hyundai slammed into one on the Merritt Parkway.

And no joking, the state promptly announces that Mountain Lions are again extinct in Connecticut! Meanwhile, sightings continue.
