Mother of Casey Goodson Jr. says he was shot dead while entering home with sandwich

The family of Casey Goodson Jr. is calling for justice after the 23-year-old was shot dead while entering his home on Dec. 4 in Columbus, Ohio.

Goodson's family said he was returning from a dentist appointment and had a Subway sandwich in his hand, according to family co-counsel Sean L. Walton. "Casey had the screen door open and his keys in the door and Deputy Jason Meade fired shots at Casey," Walton told ABC News Tuesday. "He fell into the house, where he lay in his kitchen."

There is no police video of the shooting, since Franklin County Sheriff's task force officers are not issued body cameras.

Goodson was fatally shot by Franklin County Sheriff’s Office deputy Jason Meade. Meade, who had been taking part in an unsuccessful search for a fugitive along with the U.S. Marshal's Office, said Goodson -- who was not the target of the search -- waived a gun at him when he drove by his police car. Meade confronted Goodson outside his home and he refused to drop his gun, U.S. Marshal Peter Tobin said at a press conference last Friday. Police said a gun was found “at the scene”, but Goodson's family said he was a legal gun owner.

On Tuesday, U.S. Attorney David M. DeVilliers announced that the U.S. attorney's office and FBI will review Goodson's death. The Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice, the Cincinnati division of the FBI and the Columbus Police Department, the investigation will review whether any federal civil rights laws were violated, according to a statement.

1. The procedure was to notify the state investigative arm

immediately after the shooting. They failed to do that, and the state then refused to investigate because all the evidence had been tainted.

This is a classic example for the need to ensure accountability. The cop gets protected from criminal charges by the failure of his organization to follow the rules. Failing to follow the rules should have significant criminal liability.

A gun drawn and shots fired at a man in a doorway with food in hand and keys in the door is OBVIOUSLY not threatening the life of the officer and if that cowardly piece of shit WAS actually scared, then he is mentally unfit to hold the honor of a badge and incapable of being trusted with the power of a firearm and the right to discharge that weapon either.

6. I feel you. I am outraged as well.

But I also understand that politics and democracy is about winning voters to your way of thinking. That means, often, how the message is said, what is actually said, is more important than the idea the message is trying to convey.

"Defund the police" was an easy layup for the GOP. The concept was too easily converted into a wedge issue.

The cops can't clean themselves up, we the people and our democratic government must do that.

I observe two things, routinely, in these incidents. First the cops are in a state of fear on the job that borders on panic at all times. And they have guns, can summon a small army in minutes with more guns and armor? That's a huge problem. Imagine being in perpetual fear and paranoia for 8+ hours a day? That would drive any human being to insanity.

The second is the obvious racial fear. I'm white and male. I know the fear, it was trained into me and I had to unlearn it. In doing so, I see it all the time with other white people.

So the cops, are on a double cocktail of fear when dealing with any black person, for any reason. That's what we have to fix.

We have to get our law enforcement out of this war/fear/paranoia mode and we have to teach white people to stop being afraid of black people.

I get white guilt, I had to get over it myself. But we, as a nation, but more specifically white people, have to unlearn this guilt and fear we all carry. We have to start recognizing the basic humanity in all human beings. We have to respect that basic humanity as much as we respect ourselves.

No bodycams when they want less questions about how it all went down, for sure! Makes me Three in the back? Can't tell a sandwich from a weapon? If he was acting as a member of that U.S.Marshall operation, he even had the wrong guy and the operation was over. Ahhh...but without a kill, huh?


Officer was in on these fatal shootings back in June, 2018, as well. Dude gets around under those U.S. Marshall auspices! Yeah, that not-explained-something made them back up out the door...and then fatally end the standoff. Did his service weapon score? BCI investigation here too; yet he lived to kill another day!
