This is a map of Black population density as a percentage of population in each area in the United States.
The South aint Red, folks. Its suppressed. Dont pray for the South to secede. Ride down here and help fight.

(129,379 posts)And you have states like MS that SHOULDN'T be "deep red" with a black population of almost 40%.
I know I have posted this before on DU in the past but IMHO, there's a whole lot of generational PTSD going on down there in addition to the suppression.

(12,164 posts)Thanks for posting. This is one of the main reasons it makes my blood boil when people say we need to "punish the Red states" for being "takers" while the Blue states keep them propped up with their tax dollars.
These states have millions of black and brown residents, many of whom are poor, trying to survive in the belly of the beast. Republican governors and legislatures are the ones keeping state taxes low, declining Medicaid expansion, and ignoring environmental threats to their residents.
And, by the way, when these people vote, they tend to vote for Democrats. If we ever want to flip Georgia, Texas, et al., we're going to need their help.

(11,484 posts)Seems like that would make it harder to vote for people who don't drive.

(75 posts)I had a conversation about this topic the other day with my brother. There is no reason we should not be winning in the south except for voter suppression. Not just voter roll purges, all of it. It is so frustrating to know that with more money and organization we could be doing better down here. But when you have the mentality of people like Lindsey Graham saying "If youre a young, African American or an immigrant, you can go anywhere in this state, you just need to be conservative, not liberal." people of color hear those things and think it is a waste of time to stand in loooonnngg lines to vote just to be beaten time and time again.
But the votes are here if we can do a Stacey Abrahms type approach in all the southern states. Mississippi for sure. They just need more engagement. IMO

(6,150 posts)Mississippi could go Democrat having seen how Georgia did it.

(3,268 posts)and come from a less than 20% Connecticut. But I have lived in Black majority public housing and dealt with blacks in both the military and rehabs. Here's the shocking parts for those less familiar-They are people, humans who are a mix of good and bad. Some are assholes and some are saints. So very much like my cousins...some are gems and some are not. Here's the thing-if you close off the possibility of closeness based on color you will miss half the people worth knowing. I don't want to do that.
