Retiring Michigan congressman leaves Republican Party over GOP bids to overturn election

LANSING, Mich. — A retiring Michigan congressman said Monday he is leaving the Republican Party and becoming an independent to protest efforts to overturn Democrat Joe Biden’s victory over President Donald Trump.

Rep. Paul Mitchell, of Dryden, is nearing the end of his second and final term. He wrote a letter to Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy on the same day electors formalized Biden’s win.

“It is unacceptable for political candidates to treat our election system as though we are a third-world nation and incite distrust of something so basic as the sanctity of our vote,” he said.

Mitchell, 64, said he voted for Trump despite some reservations about four more years of his leadership. He criticized GOP leaders for tolerating “unfounded conspiracy theories” without defending a secure electoral process. He did not join 106 House Republicans who signed onto a Texas lawsuit — rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court — that sought to invalidate the results in Michigan and three other states.

He received plenty of emails from me during the Mueller fiasco and always gave some noncommittal type answer for his position. Then he announced he was not running for reelection and I called him a coward and his reply stated that he "could no longer tolerate the current culture in Congress" whatever that's supposed to mean. He couldn't even say it was his own party that was at fault. Now he comes out and says he's no longer a member of the GOP??? Does he really think he's fooling most of us? He also admits he voted for Trump?

Give me a freakin' break! He's just trying to rewrite his history and come back in some other political position and play both sides of the fence. He has no moral or ethical compass as far as I'm concerned. I, for one, certainly won't forget him if he tries to run again in the future.

This is what gerrymandering brought to my district. We used to be solidly Democratic.
