Pete Buttigieg has emerged as a frontrunner to become President-elect Joe Biden's secretary of transportation, according to a CNN report.
Buttigieg's nomination would catapult the former South Bend, Indiana, mayor and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate to the upper echelons of the federal government, putting him in charge of an agency with roughly 58,000 employees.
It is widely expected that the 38-year-old Buttigieg, who represents a new generation of Democratic leadership, will run for president again. An opportunity in the federal government would give Buttigieg a valuable springboard for any future political plans, especially given the difficulties that Democrats face running statewide in Indiana - the Midwestern state that overwhelmingly supported the Trump-Pence ticket in both 2016 and 2020 and reelected Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb in November.
The discussions regarding the position are ongoing, according to CNN, but several other candidates are said to have been considered for the role, including Mayor Eric Garcetti of Los Angeles, Gov. Gina Raimondo of Rhode Island, and former Mayor Rahm Emanuel of Chicago.

(32,027 posts)The mayor of a small college town has no practical knowledge of transportation or infrastructure issues. If he gets the job it will be because he endorsed Biden ahead of the South Carolina primary. Which is fine. It is a political appointment just like the other Cabinet positions.

(1,351 posts)I dont get stating an opinion as fact. So you know for a fact that Buttigieg only got the job because he endorsed Biden ahead of the South Carolina primary? (Did President-elect Joe Biden call you and tell you?). And youre also privy to Petes e qualifications due to personal intimate vetting and knowledge of his ENTIRE experience?

(32,027 posts)Yet you only get excited by mine? Probably because you agree with the opinions of the others and don't agree with mine. Does Obama or Biden have to tell you everything about politics? If they don't say something then it can't be true? Wow.
As far as Pete's qualifications I said in my post that the political reason is fine. It is how almost all cabinet positions are filled. And he ran for president, remember? I would hope in that run he told us everything about his qualifications. Why would someone have to have "personal intimate vetting and knowledge" to find out if he is qualified? Did he hold things back?

(9,989 posts)The US military IS logistics, if defined by a single word. And our Intelligence, as a nation, has been at the forefront of learning how all the networks and supply lines operate in a given theatre. Time to turn that kind of thinking to our own problems!

(149,640 posts)Many towns have city managers doing the nuts and bolts work, while the mayor is mainly ceremonial.
That was not the case for Buttigieg. His position was a truly executive position, where he had control of the city's government. He learned a lot in that 2 term position; plus he's a quick study.
This position would be great for him!
