The most prescient line ever. Points to those who know the source without looking it up on the internet.
I will say this. When I first saw the movie this line is in, some two decades after the movie was first released, I practically fell off my chair. It was amazing then, and remains even more amazing nearly four more decades later.
I frequently post this, and no one ever gets it. Sigh.

(7,418 posts)that was early on the Hollywood track toward what became a new golden age in the late 1960s on through the 1970s. For some reason, I thought I embedded that Melvyn Douglas bit on this page in the last year.

(25,862 posts)I had not seen this since that time I saw the movie a very long time ago, and had forgotten the context. Thank you again.
A separate comment. How is it that Paul Newman, who invariably played awful men, became a matinee idol? Honestly, I don't think he ever played a likeable person. Yes, he was an amazing actor and absolutely deserves all of the accolades showered upon him. But I don't think any single person he ever portrayed on screen was even remotely likeable.
But again, thank you so very much for this clip, because it gives a context to the quote.

(7,418 posts)The camera loved him, he was an exceptional actor, and he just had charisma. That's why his performances are so rivetting. Yeah, he was an anti-hero but a number of his roles were more like scalawags than outright villains.
